Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition. 
 
Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Dear Support,

I'm trying to start a wave computation with input from a flow-computation which I've already executed, so it's an offline coupling. Both the mdf and mdw have the same name. However, the delft3d-prompt gives the following error:

*** ERROR: Delftio initialization WAVE side failed
Is file 'dioconfig.ini' present?

The dio-wave-error file gives the following:

DioError 101: Could not connect to stream FLOW2WAVE_DATA.his
DioError 203: Could not open FLOW2WAVE_DATA for reading

I've already copied the dioconfig.ini from the w32/wave/default-folder into the working-directory, but this has no effect. I've also tried this with the dioconfig.ini from svn.oss.deltares.nl, but to no effect.

What can I do?

Hi Menno,
Does it run when you do not use information from FLOW?
If so, are you 'reference dates' in both FLOW (so in the com-file) and WAVE identical?

Hi Arjen,

When WAVE is run in standalone-mode, so with manual input in the 'Time Frame' window, it runs without problems. In both cases, the same reference date is used.

FYI: an online FLOW-WAVE computation has no problem starting. It's purely the offline WAVE simulation with input from a com-file that causes trouble.

I am also facing the same problem when running a coupled flow-wave simulation. Could you able to solve this error. I was running flow-wave coupled simulation, but now it shows this error" *** ERROR: Delftio initialization WAVE side failed Is file 'dioconfig.ini' present? " but this is present in the folder and dio-wave-errors shows" DioError 101: Could not connect to stream FLOW2WAVE_DATA.txt DioError 903: Could not open FLOW2WAVE_DATA.txt for deletion.

Looking for anyone's help to solve this problem

I have observed a similar sequence of error messages (although I've never managed to establish the cause).

The approach I adopt is to deal with this is
1) ensure that all output files are deleted from the simulation folder
2) first delete the dioconfig.ini file then copy a fresh version of it to the simulation folder

If the error messages remain I create a new simulation folder and repopulate it with the input files and dioconfig.ini.
So far this approach has cleared the issue.

I've tried every different permutation of this, and still have the problem. Does anyone have a solution to this?

And to reiterate the importance of what other responders already said, make sure that you delete the comm files first before re-running.

I had a similar issue if I was running a batch of simulations. I discovered that if my computer had gone into sleep mode then the communication between the flow and wave modules had some sort of glitch and I would get this error. When I changed my computer settings I stopped having this issue.
