DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

Hello,

I have a couple of questions about the Delft3D-PART. So here is the general idea of the modelling, I am trying to model a storm-water outlet in a lake, with fine particles (range 90 micron) to see where they settle. Since I was planning on modelling them as non cohesive particles :

- Is it pertinent to keep with the Delft3D-PART, which is convenient because of the zoomgrid, and the bottom layer, or would you suggest any other module, like the FLOW with sediments?

- Since the settling velocity equation is for cohesive particles in PART, is there a relation between the factor A_0 and the particle size, when the n coefficient is set to 0?

- PART is stochastic, does it give the average simulation of many or is one suppose to run it several times?

- PART also allows different parameter to be defined regarding the wind, how does it change from the wind field given in FLOW, does the wind need to be re-specified?

Also, could you help me with the distinctions, between PART and FLOW for the following aspects :

- Is there a difference in the behavior of the bottom layer?
- Is there a way of introducing time varying discharge of sediments from an outlet since it is one the main aspects of the project?
- Is there a way of working with Z layers and sediments, in FLOW, since stratification processes are important in lakes?

If you have any literature regarding these matters, it would be highly appreciated.

I will ask my colleague who is more knowledgeable about PART to have a look at your questions. (I could answer a number of them myself, but not all ;)).
