Bennie Minnema! 2017-07-15T08:21:55Z 2017-07-14T17:39:56Z
We are happy to announce that iMOD 4.0 has just been released, including a brand new parallel solver, the Parallel Krylov Solver Package. This solver has been developed by Deltares, USGS and WEnR (Alterra) in collaboration with Utrecht University and Delft University of Technology. From now on you can run your iMOD model on a multi-core computer allowing drastic reduction in run times. The PKS package can be used both on multi-core personal desktop and laptop computers but also on powerful supercomputers. A new tutorial-section on how to use the PKS package has been added to the tutorial 'Model Simulation'; go check it out!
Bennie Minnema 2017-07-14T17:39:56Z Dutch iMOD User Day 2017 Bennie Minnema 2017-06-30T09:27:07Z 2017-06-28T12:49:53Z
On June 14, 2017 the Dutch version of the iMOD User Day 2017 was held. During the morning session a taste of using the new iMOD-implementation of the SFR-, LAK, MNW- and UZF-packages was offered: a selection of the tutorials were practised hands-on by all participants individually (on their own laptop or a laptop provided by the Deltares Software Dagen). This was alternated by plenairy explanations of each package. The morning of the iMOD User Day was concluded with a summary of ongoing iMOD-developments.

During the afternoon a beta-testing session was organized on the new Parallel Krylov Solver Package. Participants were offered the possibility to test a beta-version of iMODFLOW containing the PKS-package. We tested the installation of the required MPI-software on various hardware and we applied the PKS-package on a number of real-world cases. The participants introduced a wide variety of laptops, most of them containing a quad-core processor which preliminary results in a speed-up of a factor of 2 to 3 depending on the rest of the hardware configuration. We would like to thank all participants for their feedback!

Powerpoints presentations can be found here.

Bennie Minnema 2017-06-28T12:49:53Z iMOD User Day during Dutch version of Deltares Software Days (14th June 2017) Frans Roelofsen 2017-05-31T09:42:31Z 2017-05-31T09:39:51Z
Every year Deltares organises an national and international Software Week. It was a very lively happening with 45 participants. We prepared an ambitious programme of 19 presentations (for the full programme, click here); each session started with international- and national (external) presentations followed by short pitches. A wide variety of topics were covered in sessions titled “Groundwater management with iMOD – cases”, “Geomodelling with iMOD” and “Recently developed concepts”; for the full programme click here. New international iMOD-users shared their use-cases with the audience, but also existing iMOD-users experienced the mix of being updated with the latest developments and sharing their iMOD-experiences in an international context as very inspiring. Bennie Minnema 2016-12-05T13:22:53Z 2016-10-04T09:10:13Z
On November 2nd and 3rd an international 2-day course on iMOD-modelling was held, part of the Deltares Software Days. This iMOD-course focused on building one’s own iMOD-groundwater model from scratch or enhancing/converting your existing MODFLOW model into iMOD. Participants brought their own laptop including their own data or groundwater model. The participants were guided and assisted by iMOD-specialists with years of experience with iMOD modelling. At the end of these two days the participant had a first or enhanced version of an iMOD-groundwater model based on their own data. During the course workflows, tools and possible workarounds were shared. The interest in a course with a ‘bring your own data’-concept specifically on a pre-set date strongly depends on the coincidence of consultants just starting a new groundwater modelling project; we are considering offering this type of course with a higher frequency; for more info, please contact us.

Bennie Minnema 2016-10-04T09:10:13Z iMOD International User Day on November 1st, 2016. Feedback is most welcome: send us an email or post your feedback and suggestions on the forum.

The Save As a DEMO option of the 2D cross section and 3D Tool:

It is now possible to start iMOD immediately with your pre-defined 2D- or 3D-visualisations. Using the new 'Save As a DEMO' option in the 2D cross-section or 3D Tool you can save your settings in a separate / new IMF-file (see section 7.1 and 7.3 respectively in the iMOD User Manual). For a description of the possibilities to start iMOD using an existing IMF-file, see section 2.4 of the iMOD User Manual ('Starting iMOD').

In iMODFLOW:

iMODFLOW includes MetaSWAP SVN-version 1047; compared with the previous version only some in- and output statements for post-processing purposes have been improved.

ISG river segments are allocated to grid cells intersected by segment lines. In iMOD 3.3 the segments are now allocated to all grid cells which are intersected by the lines, but also taking the flow-width into account. This means that the river segment may be spread out over several cells perpendicular to the segment line. This depends on the cell size, the cross section width (pro?le) and the surface water level. The combination of those three factors now determines the wetted area in each grid cell. The total conductance calculated in iMOD 3.2.1 and 3.3 are the same, however, in iMOD 3.3 the distribution over the grid cells is enhanced.

It is now possible to have 2-D cross sections (bathymetries) linked to the ISG river segments - in addition to the 1-D cross sections.

The temporal upscaling of abstractions time series when using *.txt-files sometimes produced an unintended time-shift; this has been corrected, together with a correct processing of NODATA values for upscaled average (instead of median) values of abstraction rates.

The iPEST (parameter estimation) functionality is now available in iMOD 3.3.

Ad 2) Developments:

Current developments for nearby releases (3.4 or 3.5):

The GeoConnect Tool:

In many cases groundwater model layer parameters are based on assembled (e.g. summed) detailed geological aquifer- and aquitard-properties (elevation, thickness, geometry (extent), hydraulic conductivity, etc.); the GeoConnect Tool will allow the modeller to define and utilize permanent links between 1) the (unassembled) geologic layers (incl. it's properties) and 2) the aggregated model layers. The GeoConnect Tool will allow to re-calculate the hydraulic conductivities of a model layer after adapting the individual weights of each contributing geological layer.

We intent to make the GeoConnect Tool available in the next iMOD-release.

Additional runfile-options:

We are implementing a number of additional runfile-options; for a specification of the runfile-options scheduled for the iMOD 3.4 release, please have a look in chapter 10 of the iMOD 3.3 User Manual.

Other ongoing developments:

We are working on extending the list of by iMOD-supported MODFLOW2005-packages, among others the MNW2-, LAK-, UZF, SWR1 and/or SFR2-packages; a fixed schedule of implementation/prioritization is not available yet.

We just started the process of making iMOD-MT3DMS/SEAWAT open source and include it in the iMOD-framework. This modified version of MT3DMS/SEAWAT uses an easy-to-use runfile for specifying model data for many layers and supports the common iMOD file-formats. We estimate to finalize this open source process mid 2017.

We are currently developing a new parallel solver package for MODFLOW called PKS (Parallel Krylov Solver). It is based on overlapping domain decomposition combining both the techniques of MPI and OpenMP. This development is done together with the USGS in corporation with Utrecht University and Delft University of Technology. This year we will start incorporating this new PKS package in iMOD. It will facilitate running large iMOD models on powerfull multi-core computers allowing a drastic reduction of runtimes.

Ad 3) How to obtain the 'free-of-charge' Deltares executables of iMOD 3.3?

To obtain a copy of the Deltares-executables of iMOD 3.3, please submit a request on; you will receive an email with download- and installation instructions.

We require also the current iMOD-users to submit a request for the new iMOD 3.3 Deltares-executables because:

We like to keep the list of iMOD community members up-to-date, allowing us to provide active community members with relevant iMOD-news.

An iMOD Software License Agreement is valid per major (e.g. 3.0) or minor (e.g. 3.3) release.

In case of possible bugfix-releases of iMOD 3.3 (e.g. 3.3.1) registered iMOD 3.3-users will be able to re-use the ealier provided iMOD 3.3 download-specifications; we will inform you (per email or in the News-section of the iMOD-oss-site) in case of a bugfix-release.

For more info on the iMOD software, please contact: Stichting Deltares, P.O. Bennie Minnema 2015-11-17T08:22:48Z 2015-11-17T08:16:55Z
We are pleased to inform you about the release of iMOD 3.2. The main reason for this release is an update of the MetaSWAP-package.

Below please find:

A summary of the new and improved features.

A description of how to obtain iMOD 3.2.

Ad 1) Summary of new and improved features.

In iMODFLOW:

As mentioned the main reason for this release is an update of the MetaSWAP-package (SVN-version 1044) which is applied in the National Hydrological Model (LHM) of the Netherlands. With this update the coupling to the tracer module TRANSOL and the model output options have been greatly enhanced (for the release notes of Alterra, please click here). The first results for the National Hydrological Model of the Netherlands (LHM) are promising showing credible dynamics of salt profiles and salt loading on surface water. The report containing these results will be online in a couple of weeks.

The iMOD-GUI now only invokes the iMODFLOW-executable from the {installfolder} avoiding the necessity of having ‘execute’-rights in other model-folders.

In the Graphical User Interface of iMOD (iMOD-GUI):

Colour Legends: we added the possibility to customize the default colour legend scheme and save it as your new default in a * .CLR file.

In the cross-section tool:

The cross-section window can now be split so that it is possible to display two or more different cross-sections at the same time in one iMOD session.

Thickness of the boreholes can be adjusted.

In a cross section with boreholes, while hovering with your mouse vertically over a borehole the vertical position of the cursor on this borehole synchronizes instantly with the corresponding depth interval in the corresponding description table.
