Optimal machine build for D3D?

Hi All,

I'm thinking to buy a new computer for the primary purpose of running D3D models. Of course, I enjoy heavy matlab computing as well.. and want graphics capabilities to make fast, intricate plots (and dual monitors).

I'm curious if any one has suggestions about recent builds or hardware specifications particularly well-suited for running fast, stable D3D simulations.
Mainly, I use D3D for morphological modeling (FLOW-WAVE coupling with sediment updating).

Thanks in advance for your advice,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Some tips:

Hardware:
Use Intel processors (in combination with the Intel compiler).
A lot of cores is only interesting when you can run parallel. If you mainly do combined FLOW - WAVE calculations, SWAN will use all cores but FLOW won't. Using DomainDecomposition will enable FLOW to use more than one core. Of course you can always do separate calculations at the same time.

Software:
Linux is faster than Windows.
Use the Intel compiler (in combination with Intel processors).

Regards,

Adri

Thank you for the tips Adri. I will keep that in mind.

Any other tips? E.g. Intel i7 vs Xeon? Minimum graphics card, e.g. Is NVIDIA GeForce GT640 enough, or should I shoot more for NVIDIA Quadro 2000 bottom end?

Hi Shawn,

I did not do any detailed performance tests, but looking at some tests in another project, i7 seems to be faster than Xeon. Graphics is not a bottle neck.

Hi All

8 years have passed since the publication of this post.

If I usually run wave-flow coupled 2D and 3D models (wind, waves, tide, discharge, sediment). Which computer characteristics can improve the computing time of MPI Delft3D v4 or Flexible Mesh models?

I'm about to buy a high performance computer mainly for usage of Delft3D and FM software.

Any new tip or suggestion will be highly appreciated

Kindly regards,
