What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small amount of information tansmitted and stored on your computer when you first visit a web site. At each subsequent visit your computer sends the cookie back to the web site. The web site in turn makes use of this information again. This use may be diverse, roughly cookies fall into 2 groups:
- Cookies for the individual visitor needed by the website to function properly. Example usage of such cookies: remembering that you are logged in, or what font you used to read the information of the site.
- Cookies are (also) important for the owner of the website. Examples usage of such cookies are: maintaining statistics on the use of the website, allowing cookies from advertisers.
Legislation about cookies
Since June 2012, the so-called "Cookiewet" is in effect (in terms of Article 11.7a of the Telecommunications Act). This law states that every website must inform the visitor what cookies are placed on his or her computer and their functions. Also (at first visit) a visitor needs to give consent for usage of these cookies. Exceptions are cookies that are necessary for the functioning of the website.
