Wilco Hazeleger, Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Professor of Climate System Science at Utrecht University, delivered the keynote address for the Delft-FEWS event on June 16th remotely from his home. In his presentation, "Open the black box of data-driven research," he discussed how artificial intelligence is used in climate models and the implications for improvements to weather prediction. The outputs of weather models are some of the most important inputs to hydraulic models and thus also for Delft-FEWS.

We were curious to hear about his first encounter with the Delft-FEWS community, so we followed up with Wilco for a mini interview. For the benefit of the Dutch users, the interview is presented below in Dutch.

Wilco, wat vond je ervan om virtueel de keynote speech te geven bij onze jaarlijkse Delft-FEWS gebruikersdag?

‘Leuk om bij te dragen. Virtueel zijn we ondertussen wel een beetje gewend. Bijna al het hoger onderwijs gebeurt nu online. Het is niet allemaal optimaal, maar een lezing geven is prima. Ik mis wel de directe interactie met publiek, dat maakt het wat minder leuk.’

En wat viel je op aan de Delft-FEWS community? Wat vond je leuk, verrassend, uniek, interessant,..?

‘De community is breed, breder dan verwacht. Goed te zien dat het zo dicht bij de praktijk van water management ligt en dat men uit het hele land (en buitenland) kwam. De afstand van de inhoud van mijn presentatie tot die werkomgeving is misschien groot, maar data science en artificial intelligence komt overal aan bod, dus het is goed om daar een beeld van te vormen.’

En dan een laatste vraag, wat is tijdens je presentatie niet, of minder aan bod gekomen en wat zou je de NL Delft-FEWS community nog willen meegeven?

‘Het ging meer over simulaties dan over data-integratie. Voor de FEWS community is dat ook relevant. Ik heb het ook niet over Open Science en FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable en re-usable) data gehad. Ik zou de FEWS community willen uitdagen vooral zoveel mogelijk te delen met elkaar, kennis, ervaringen, data en code. Samen kom je verder. ‘
