Deltares has a long standing experience in the development of operational flood forecasting tools, with early versions of what is now the Delft-FEWS forecasting system starting operation in the Nile basin in 1992. The initial pilot version of present version of Delft-FEWS was developed by Delft Hydraulics in the EU 5th Framework Project EFFS (European Flood Forecasting System), together with a broad consortium of European experts in the field. The pilot version formed the starting point for the development of the National Flood Forecasting System (NFFS) in England and Wales, as commissioned by the Environment Agency to Delft Hydraulics, and resulted in a completely updated version of Delft-FEWS. Deltares holds the Intellectual Property Rights of Delft-FEWS, allowing Delft-FEWS to be applied as the primary operational flood forecasting tool used by flood management authorities in basins across the continental United States and Alaska, in England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Taiwan, Pakistan, the Zambezi basin, Ghana, Canada, Colombia, Indonesia, Bolivia and by the Mekong River Commission. Delft FEWS is currently also being applied more and more in coastal areas in for example the Netherlands and Brasil. Furthermore, Delft-FEWS has proven to be an effective tool for supporting the operational management of hydropower facilities in Austria, Uruguay/Argentina and the United States of America.
In addition to its role as a flood forecasting tool, Delft-FEWS has also be extended for use as a water quality forecasting tool in Netherlands, Singapore and South-Korea; as a groundwater scenario management tool in the National Groundwater Modelling System in England and Wales; as a drought forecasting system in River Po, Italy; and Taiwan and as a Water Information System for a number of Water Boards in The Netherlands.
Deltares supports interested parties in the implementation of their operational water management system with a team of water experts, software developers and ICT experts.
