intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

Error running Online FLOW-WAVE

Hi all,

Happy new year to you all.........
I am having a big trouble running FLOW online with WAVE, can anyone help me out,. FYI i ran it successfully once but now with my new file sets which are attached here, it is stopping automatically after about one day of simulation. When trying to dry run the simulation it is running successfully without throwing any error. please help where i am going wrong. i am attaching a log file also to show the nature of the error
another question is if it is possible to run WAVE in off-line mode with FLOW in the open source version? if yes then how?? because in my case in WAVE GUI there is no such option like use hydro-dynamic result(as described in the manual); only run Run WAVE together with FLOW is available which is i think the on-line mode.
please help.....its urgent....
thanking you.

Hi Bert,

A very Happy new year to you!!
can u please go through my earlier post and see where is the problem? i am stuck in that n my m.tech. project presentation is on Wednesday. can you please help.
i am attaching my dioconfig file, i tried to run the model by comment out the communication time-out option but its still failing. is there any file size limit to com file or hotstart file?
waiting for an answer.....
thanking you..

Hi Partho,

It's better to ask priority request via the Delft3D support desk in the context of a Service Package agreement, then it will get higher priority.

I'm sorry I don't know a solution for this. I have just tried to run your simulation on my laptop using executables built from slightly different revisions of the code than you seem to be using. When I use Delft3D-WAVE 3.04.01.565 it stops immediately upon the first call to wave using an error that looks very similar to your problem. The model stops writing the swan.inp file one $-sign after the TABLE 'COMPGRID' NOHEAD 'SWANOUT2' block. However, when I try to use the 3.04.01.1155 version then the first wave call works fine yet I don't see any crucial changes between the two revisions and time is too short to determine whether it will then stop much later as you experienced. Since I didn't see any crucial code changes maybe it's some uninitialized memory that's OK most of the time but not always. Just after the SWANOUT2 block it should continue with the curve file block. I noticed that your curve file is empty. Rather than an empty curve file I would expect no curve file, so I removed the CurveFile line from the .mdw file. Now your simulation starts fine in the 3.04.01.565 version. Is this a coincidence or a clue towards the solution? I don't know, but maybe you can give it a try.

There is no limit to the com-file and there should also be no limit to the hotstart files. Unfortunately, it's not possible to run WAVE stand alone using FLOW data from a prepared COM file.

Success,

Bert

Hi Partho,

Just a quick update. Your simulation has been running overnight on my laptop without further problems after removing the CurveFile parameter; it's now at 11.8% which is further than the 4.1% indicated in your log file. I hope that after this change makes the simulation run fine as well on your computer. We'll look at the empty CurveFile case to see whether we can prevent this problem from occurring in future versions.

Hello Bert,

first of all thank you very very much......i will be indebted to you a lot....
it is indeed the Curvefile problem..... my model ran successfully when i removed that curvefile line.....actually initially i tried to define a curvefile but later changed my mind....when i deleted the curvefile from the FLOW GUI module & tried to save it it was showing error and wasn't saving the *.mdw file....but finally i cud save it without the file but had no idea that it is still there in mdw file....my old curvefile name was still there so it was searching for it 2 save data but when not getting it failed to write & stopped abnormally...actually the log file was not specific so i cudnt find whats going wrong & i never thought to check the mdw file.....so..... i think you should check the empty curvefile case for preventing further confusion to the users....
u r great...thanks a lot...and sorry that i cudnt answer earlier as i told that i was too busy for i had my final m.tech. thesis presentation.....
and sorry again for hurrying up in a forum...i know its not a paid one, completely voluntary.....but i was desperate....i apologize for that.....
and for your service package subscription advice what i can tell that i am using this model for the first time in my institute... i am basically a remote sensing specialist... now focusing on modelling as well....if i can prove the worth of the model indeed our institute can purchase service pack for future students' use...
thanks a lot again.... and i will disturb you again in future.....have a nice time....
