Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Space varying solar radiation

Hi Delft3D community,

I am applying the delft-flow in area of about 22000 km2. I want to turn on the heat flux model (Ktemp=2), but I have space varying meteo data. At the moment, I manage to setup an time series an single point station (file .tem), but my study area contains ocean and estuaries and the single point isn’t enough, I need the meteo data to vary with the space (I did the same with wind data, but I couldn't find anything in the manual to do with the net solar radiation data). Anyone can help me how to do the file varying with the space?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Magda,

Probably you cannot yet to specify space-varying solar radiation in Delft3D, only time-varying. You have to extend by yourself or ask help of Deltares.

Hi Magda,

it is possible to use space varying meteo data, see section B.7.1 in the manual. Although not documented, I think it is also possible to specify space-varying solar radiation analogous to the other meteo parameters by using the keyword 'Filws' with quantity 'sw_radiation_flux' and unit 'W/m2'.

I haven't tried it myself, but I hope it works.

Good luck!

Hi Stefan,

I tried to use the space varying solar radiation, but I came across the following error:

*** ERROR Meteo input on a separate grid is not allowed in combination with input of solar radiation in .tem file.

I am using the ocen type heat flux model (Ktemp=5). And the input is:
Solrad = #Y#
Filws = #WRF.ams#

Apparently, it is not possible to use this meteo separate equidistant grid or is it just a bug on the code?

Has anyone used this combination successfully? (Ktemp=5; Solrad = #Y# and Filws = #xxxxx.ams#)

Hello everyone,

Just to let you know.

I solved this error just turning off the flag Solrad and mantaning the keyword Filws = #xxxxx.ams#.

Looking at the code, it seems that if you turn on the flag Solrad, you must to input this information of short wave ratiation only by time varying file (.tem). If you want to use a space and time varying short wave ratiation it is just put the keyword Filws = #xxxxx.ams#.
