intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

DELWAQ coupled with z-layer Delft3D FLOW model?

Hello, all,

I am curious to know that if anyone ever has successfully used DELWAQ coupled with Delft3D z-layer FLOW model? If so, I need some serious help on how to make the model work? Please see my recent post about my struggle with the z-layer DELWAQ model.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Johnathan,

Have you thought about purchasing an appropriate level of maintenance and support package?

Cheers,

Ben

Hi, Ben,

Our company already has purchased a maintenance and support package. Is there other ways to get technical support from Deltares in addition to this forum?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Please be patient - I said in the other thread that z-layers and domain decomposition are an unusual set-up, but I was wrong. In fact a year ago I was looking into a very similar model set-up, but the problem there was not this numbering of boundary cells, instead it was about the interpretation of the water quality processes and the subsequent results. So, yes, DELWAQ does work with z-layers. There is, however, something going on which I have not got to the bottom yet.

Arjen,

I know you have been working so hard to help me to resolve my issue, Thanks.

I just want to check if anyone has already worked with z-layer DELWAQ successfully and hopefully they can share their experience.

emoticon Understood.

Note: you can contact delft3d.support@deltares.nl for such official help requests. They will make sure that the question is handled by somebody here - and haunt them if they are not taking action ;)

Issue is resolved by Arjen by updating ddcouple.

Thank you very much, Arjen!

Glad to hear that. The problem is that DELWAQ assumes a particular numbering structure in case of a t3D application and that was upset by a procedure to filter out those exchanges that would never contribute to the transport (exchanges involving inactive segments).
