intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.
Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.
On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

delftdashboard not starting

I just downloaded the DelftDashBoard via svn OpenEarthTools and put in an oet directoty.

In MATLAB, I navigate to the /oet/matlab directory and run "oetsettings" command. After that I run "ddb" I get the following:

>> ddb
Delft DashBoard v1.01.8218
Matlab v8.0.0.783 (R2012b)
Finding directories ...
Finding coordinate systems ...
Could not retrieve SuperTrans.xml from server, no data update!
Error using ddb_urlwrite (line 143)
Error downloading URL. Your network connection may be down or your proxy settings improperly configured.

Error in ddb_getCoordinateSystems (line 74)
ddb_urlwrite(supertransdata.file(ii).URL,[handles.superTransDir filesep supertransdata.file(ii).name]);

Error in ddb_initialize (line 70)

Error in DelftDashBoard (line 92)

Error in ddb (line 63)

As you can see I'm running MATLAB R2012b. I am running Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Next steps to try?

Dear Steven,

For quick and easy model set-up Delft Dashboard downloads data (bathymetries, astronomical components, land boundaries, etc.) from online databases. Therefore, you need an internet connection and permission to download files from these online databases (mainly, but also a few others). The error below indicates that Dashboard cannot access these databases. Reasons for this can be that your internet connection was down when you started Dashboard or that your computer is behind a proxy server that does not permit you to access/download data from the online databases. The latter could be ICT policy at your office. What you can try is to run the Dashboard executable (which you can download from at home and see whether it starts up there. If this works, it may very well be that you have to change the proxy settings at your current location.

Good luck!

Kind regards,

I am also getting the same problem. I've tried on multiple computers, using the standalone and also through Matlab. I'm not behind a proxy server at all, but can't seem to access the opendap server directly either.

Actually, I've just realised it's the first Tuesday of the month so not sure if that's the problem!!

Hello all,
There seems to have been a problem over the weekend with our OPeNDAP server that stores the data. The problem appears to be solved now.

Thanks for the quick reply Maarten.

Unfortunately I'm still having all sorts of troubles. I can get the main dashboard window open on both the standalone and Matlab versions but cannot get the program to work as it still can't access any of the databases. I'm on windows 7, 64 bit and have seen a workaround mentioned that involves the .msi file but all that is unzipped from the download is just the .exe file.

I'd really appreciate any other guidance you can provide!

Hi Dave,

Did you ever find out what was going wrong? Having used Delft Dashboard successfully myself for the last year or so, I am now getting the same error as you! I've tried removing all files and then reinstalling, with no luck. I don't know what has changed.

Hope you got it working in the end (for both of us!)
