Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition. 
 
Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to nest a cuvilinear fine grid into a regular coarse grid. When I did the first step using 'nest (1)', there are *.obs file generated, however, it was a null file. I checked my *.bnd file carefully but found no problems. Does anybody have met this problem? The coarse grid size is about 3~5 times larger than the fine grid.

The nesting tools only generate an administration for boundaries being defined as time series. You are probably using another forcing type like "Astronomic".

The problem was finally solved. I defined the boundary as 'time series' in the *.bnd file so there was no problem with the boundary type. The error was caused by data format in the grid file: the curvilinear grid was generated with D3d-RGFGRID and the coarse rectangular grid was generated with my offline program; the data in the curvilinear grid file is like 1.269022E+02 while it is like 126.9022 in the file I generate myself; I saved the grid file in the same format and then the nesting works. Hope this helps other guys~

Strange, the grid file is read in "free format" mode. "1.269022E+02" and "126.9022" should be processed identically. This should be investigated further. If we only had time.....
