intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

stand alone wave model wih Delft3D open source

Hi all,

I am new to the Deflt3D open source version.

A simple stand alone wave model was set up to observe wave transformation to nearshore area.

Wave model starting window (log file) stays with 'Starting Delft3D wave computation....' and the error file says 'Terminating error: input file missing'.

Only grid and depth files are provided as input files.

I wonder whether there is an installation problem here. Attached find the spec files.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Dissa

Dear Dissa,

I also had problems running this .mdw
But it runs correctly using a bat file like this (changing the path of your D3D_HOME):

@ echo off

set mdwfile=W01.mdw

set D3D_HOME=E:\Deltares\delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.03\win32
set waveexedir=%D3D_HOME%\wave\bin
set swanexedir=%D3D_HOME%\swan\bin
set swanbatdir=%D3D_HOME%\swan\scripts

set PATH=%waveexedir%;%swanbatdir%;%swanexedir%;%PATH%
%waveexedir%\wave.exe %mdwfile% 0

pause

I don't know why it has this problem.

Regards
Renan

Another advice is to change your boundary orientation to west.

Hi Renan,

Thanks a lot for your response.

I end up with the same error message though I run it through a bat file.

I hope the problem exists due to the installation itself, ie, there is no swan folder under w32, only wave folder is available.

Cheers,
Dissa

Hi Dissa,

Sorry for late answer.
What is the version of Delft3D you are using? Version 5.00.XX and upper uses a folder called win32.
Probably you are using 4.XX version, but it still supposed to work. Maybe the executable isn't finding some libraries.
If you are using 4.XX version, try this .bat file:

set argfile=config_flow2d3d.ini
set mdwfile=xxxx.mdw

set D3D_HOME=C:\Delft3D
set exedir=%D3D_HOME%\w32\flow\bin
set wavedir=%D3D_HOME%\w32\wave\bin
set swandir=%wavedir%
set swanbatdir=%D3D_HOME%\w32\lib

set PATH=%swanbatdir%;%exedir%;%swandir%;%inteldir%;%PATH%

start %exedir%\deltares_hydro.exe %argfile%

%wavedir%\wave.exe %mdwfile% 1

Sorry,
The right .bat for stand alone wave is this:

set mdwfile=W01.mdw

set D3D_HOME=C:\Delft3D
set exedir=%D3D_HOME%\w32\flow\bin
set wavedir=%D3D_HOME%\w32\wave\bin
set swandir=%wavedir%
set swanbatdir=%D3D_HOME%\w32\lib

set PATH=%swanbatdir%;%exedir%;%swandir%;%inteldir%;%PATH%

%wavedir%\wave.exe %mdwfile% 0

Hi,

I added "...\examples\07_wave" to the trunk (revision 2662).
