intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

hello every one.....

I have some more questions ...
I've started to model wave and flow together and although both models went well as a standalone, when I want to simulate them together, it seems it is not going to finish at all!!!!
it's just a two day simulation only with one wave and only a time series for water level...but after more than hour it didn't finish!!!
does my model seem to be unstable? is there something wrong with the time steps?
I would be glad to hear from you all soon
thank for you help..

regards

Hi Soroush,

Could you provide some more information, for example the tri-diag file?

Hi Emiel
Thanks for the help
I attach the tri-diag file....
I fix the run time problem but it seems that my output is not correct!!!
I don't knoe what to do!!!
ho can I realize what is the problem so that I can fix it!!??
I will attach the grid files.
I am looking forward to hear from you.

Ho Soroush,

I can see nothing strange from your tri-diag file, but if like you said you fixed the run-time problem than I don't expect any error in your tri-diag file anymore.
So what is your problem now? You say that your output is not correct, but in what sense? What are you trying to model and what is the model showing you (as incorrect output)?
From looking at your grid, it seems rather coarse and to have limited orthogonality (see Delft3D-FLOW manual section 4.5.2.1), whether this is causing your errors is difficult for me to judge.
If you want me to have a closer look at your model, could you attached your full model input (zipped) and explain in more detail what the problem is?

Regards,

Emiel

Hi Emiel
thanks for the help...
my main model is about sediment transport but at this time I just want to make sure that the things I have chosen for my model give me correct results.....
The problem is that I ask for some wave results in some locations and except for the position of that point all the other numbers that I get is 999.99999....
I will refine the mesh....if it seems the problem...
and I will attach the zip file...
Thx for the great help..

Hi again Emiel

I fix that problem with refining the grids....
and I also had forgotten to draw the polygonemoticon
but if you check the file for other errors I will be thankful.
