intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

Momerge/ Event parallel morphology (Multi=true)

Hi,

I've asked this question a few times and I have never had an answer. Maybe this time lucky....

I would like to carry out 'event parallel morphology', as defined in the .mor file with the keyword 'Multi=true'.

If you try and run a morphological simulation with Multi set to 'true', the simulation crashes (as expected) with the following messages in the diag file:

*** WARNING Mormerge: Mass balance only satisfied for all runs together
*** ERROR File named streamfile not found

May I please ask what the requirements are to run momerge simulations, and what format the streamfile takes? Is it as simple as an ascii file with the names of the mdf files and the weighted contributions of each run?

I am also presuming that, unless defined elsewhere in some way, that the mdf files for each momerge simulation will have to be in the same folder when you run them together. Is this correct?

Can one do this on a windows system or is it available through linux or a linux cluster only?

How would one launch a series of momerge simulations?

Best regards,

Ben

Update: A quick search for 'streamfile' shows it is called in the following functions:

engines_gpl\flow2d3d\scripts\mormerge.tcl
engines_gpl\flow2d3d\packages\kernel\src\inichk\initmerge.f90

It's quite clear in the code that this routine is set to to check the system type (windows XP, vista, linux), so this should work on a home PC, if it has enough cores.

Also looking in momerge.tlc (proceedure: readInputFile) shows that when running a momerge simulation, Delft3D is expecting all the usual command input arguemnets, plus the number of conditions, the conditions, the weight of each condition, and the number of nodes (I am guessing each node corrsponds to a simulation - its set to local host for a windows machine, so in this case I am guessing each node corresponds to a core). So I am guesisng that these arguements are passed from a batch file.

I am also guessing that the streamfile is also created by Delft3D when it clones the input directory for each condition, probably to run in seperate directories, with teh results merged in to one over-arching morphological simulation.

Am I close?

Has anybody worked out the structure of the batch file needed to get momerge working? At least for a simple case of same tide, but different wave boundary condition (morphological wave).

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I added example 5 to the trunk, revision 2049.
Please read the README file carefully.

I know your expertise on this. I must say we should have an online discussion on this. Writing only comments will close the discussion straight away! And will restrict the benefits from this information. air conditioning northern beaches
