intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

Hi,
when I run a simulation in Delft3D FLOW, the FLOW exited abnormally and gave the title mentioned message in the tri-diag file. what is the problem? the file is also attached.

Hi, Dear Dai peng,

It is because of the model is too big and used too many memory as a win32 executables. You could try to run the model in linux. It is a pity that our win64 bit executables are under testing yet, otherwise you could try the win64 version.

Qinghua

Hi Ye Qinghua:

What a pity that the problem is due to version of system. Linux is not very available for me. How about try a windows 32 bit system?

Hi Qinghua:

As you suggest, I tried Linux in a computer cluster. However it as well gave the same problem. Also I tried windows 32 bit system, the same problem.
Now I am in Hohai, I asked a friend in TUD to do the simulation, and it works. A bit strange hah. Do you think there might be something else?

Best,
Peng

Hi Peng,

If it is due to the (stack) memory problem, it won't work on any 32-bit system (both linux and windows). It can only work with 64- bit system (both linux and windows). For 32-bit system, the maximum memory the system can manage is 4GB, and seems to me your model exceed the limitation.

Hi Qinghua:

Now seems I understand what the problem is, I also checked the your FAQ website, "ERROR in real array allocation". there are four suggestions, perhaps I could have a try.

In terms of one of the solutions, the single precision executable, it is suggested to edit the "config_d_hydro.xml". I am wondering where this file located. Is it in the directory where the GUI is installed, like ****/w32/flow?but I could not find it.

Peng

Dear Peng,

You can find the "config_d_hydro.xml" in the examples folder next to the source code.
