Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition. 
 
Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Hi,

I'm trying to simulate a study in Canary Island.
I want to start with a big area (around the 6 island) and then i want to nest 3 or 4 times to reduce my area to the Tenerife coast.
For the biggest area max depth is around 4,000 m and finally the smallest area has a depth of 2,000 m.

I'd wanted to know if it is possible to use those values for depth, because some of the error that I have found when I've simulated this case are:
- velocity changes too high
- depth changes too high

I have found that the model can be used in shallow water and coastal areas, my teachers told me I can use this program for my thesis, but now I am not sure about that.

Hi Virginia,

The value of the depth shouldn't be an issue.
How did you set up your model? (2D, 3D, sigma, z-layered, resolution, timestep, ...)

thanks so much!

That explanation could be useful for my case.

Now, I'm working in 2D, but later I'd like to work in 3D.

I'm trying to use CFL=1, in these case, with my cell size (2x2km), I should work with Time step=0.1, but when I run the simulation at 30-40% I always find this error.

I'm going to have a look to the other post.

Pol files based solely on roughness type would be an enormous hassle and very time consuming TellPopeyes.
