intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

DELFT 3D WAVE - error message 'file norm end' in MDW file.

Good morning partners:
I´m totally misplaced because I have tried everything without positive results, I explain:
According to the manuals , I´ve developed the next archives:
1.- Grid file: regular grid from splines and ortogonality. (M=244 ;N=244). Used RGFGRID.
2.- Depth file: Used QUICKIN , based in boundary file which represent the line of the coast, the grid file and drawn the polygon out of the grid.
I start wave alone and input the information of the project:
- Insert the grid / depth file. The rest of parameters are not changed.
- Time frame: I have input only one period with tide. (1 m)
- Boundaries: Simplified ( Defined by orientation – NorthEast and boundaries conditions uniform/ specification of boundaries :spectra.)
- physical parameters: Introduced wind ( from it comes – 270 / 20msec) The rest no changed.
- output curves:
a) If I´ve marked the two options for computational grids: proyecto 5_5 and output for specific locations (table / 1D spectra / 2D spectra)
b) I only mark proyecto5_5.
c) No one marked.

So that, If I´ve marked the a) option, the swan doesn´t work and gives me the next error:
“C:\Deltares\Delft3D_4.01.00.rc.07\tutorial\wave\5_RETIN\Retin_feb14\proyecto_5>rem exit>>… End of SWAN run.
*** ERROR: file ‘norm end’ expected to signal a correct SWAN calculation.”
But If I only mark the b) or c) option it works perfectly but I don´t get any result, graphic or product then this is the same than nothing.

Another thing There is a part of the mdw file which the Hs computed is cero, could it be the problem?.( I show you in an image)

Could you help me?.

I add the images below.

Thanks a lot partners.

Dear ALEJANDRO,

It seems to me like a swan problem. Can you do the following:
1) kill the process before the Delft3D-WAVE crashed. Then you have the input files generated by WAVE for SWAN.
2) copy the files: INPUT, WNDNOW, BOTNOW, NEST***, grid file to a seperate folder.
3) copy swan exe from the Delft3D root folder to the seperate folder. Then run the swan command. By this you should be able to generate a Errfile and PRINT file. See what said there? There must some swan error message in those files.

Hope this will help a bit,

Qinghua

Ok Qinghua , I´ll try it but it crush very quickly and it is difficult to kill before that. Dont you think it could a different solution?

Thank for all

OK, I´ll try it but ...that process goes too quickly and I´m not sure that I´ll do correctly...

Could it be another possibility about installation, version incompatibility or another thing??

Thanks for all

Dear ALEJANDRO,

I won't think it is relevant to version incompatibility.

Do you really have a output loc file in the directory? The description you wrote above looks all normal. Can you post the swn-diag file here? I have no clue where it goes wrong.

Regards,

Qinghua

Learning about coasts here has helped me out, because now I have information that will give me the dissertation helps that I need. I hope that you'll share more content like this with us soon. Cheers for this!
