intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

On this discussion page you can post questions, research discussions or just share your experience about modelling coastal and/or estuarine systems with Delft3D FM.

Problem nesting grids on a tidal model

Hello all,

I am trying to set up a tidal model with a two-level nesting on Delft Dashboard using the tutorial provided by Deltares. From the tutorial, I'm expected to create a coarse grid for the California area and a finer grid for the San Diego bay and merge both grids using the nesting tool.

The problem is when I get to the part where I need to select the Admin File under the Nesting-2 tab, the Administration File is missing in the folder. I believe I have followed the tutorial correctly although some instructions are not clear.

Here is the link to the tutorial:
http://publicwiki.deltares.nl/display/DDB/Set+up+a+Tidal+Model+with+a+Two-level+Nesting

Any help is appreciated

Augusto

Hi Augusto,
I expect you ran the first step of the nesting (in the first tab). The nesting administration file that was generated during that step should be present in the directory in which you were working. Can you find it there?
Cheers,

Hi Maarten,

Yes, I did run the first step of the nesting but no administration file was generated in the directory though. Any other idea what the problem might be please?

Thanks in advance,
Augusto

Hi Augusto,

I am having the same problem. Were you able to resolve the issue?

Thanks!

Hi

I am having a similar problem where I cannot generate the nesting.adm file due to an error in matlab.

Reference to non-existent field 'dataDir'.

Error in ddb_NestingToolbox_Delft3DFLOW_nest1>nestHD1 (line 90)
exedir=handles.toolbox.nesting.delft3dflow.dataDir;

Error in ddb_NestingToolbox_Delft3DFLOW_nest1 (line 74)
nestHD1;

Error in gui_addElements>finishCallback (line 1249)
feval(element(i).element.callback,element(i).element.option1,element(i).element.option2);

Error in gui_addElements>pushbutton_Callback (line 1166)
finishCallback(element,i);

Error while evaluating uicontrol Callback

I have a feeling I've missed a basic step somewhere but I just can't find it.

Many thanks

Hello! I usually work with nesting and I didn't have any problems.

In this link https://publicwiki.deltares.nl/display/DDB/Nesting there is a more detailed explanation than in the video. You can check also in Flow manual,
in appendix F Delft3D-NESTHD there are some restrictions that it's importantant to take into account.

I hope this help you!
