Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition. 
 
Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Problem generating tidal constituents with Delft Dashboard

Hello All,

I am attempting to follow the steps in the Delft Dashboard webinar to set up a simple flow model for the southwest coast of Ireland, but I'm having trouble generating a set of tidal constituents for each of my boundaries. I attached an image showing my grid and inputs. I am working in a cartesian coordinate system (TM65 - Irish National Grid). I've gone through all the steps in the webinar, but when I get to the point where I go to the "boundaries" tab to check that its generated a set of the tidal constituents, nothing comes up for any of the boundaries and I get a set of errors in matlab (see attached). Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Sarah,
Can you check if a bca file (which contains the tidal constituents was generated)? If so, do the values in there look reasonable?

Also, I have a bit of a stupid, more general question. I have 6 months of my own tide data from a gauge near my study area. As part of my model validation, I was planning on forcing the model at the boundaries using tide data from a gauge in an adjacent bay (that's the nearest gauge for which there is also data, aside from my own), then comparing modeled water levels with observations from my gauge. Firstly, I'm wondering, how does Delft Dashboard extract the tidal components for an area - does it use information from all the available tide stations listed? I think I'm getting confused because I think I read in someone's thesis that they used information from a single tidal station to force the model at the boundaries (they were using Delft-TIDE). How is Delft-TIDE different from Delft Dashboard? Final question, how do I prepare a file from my tide gauge data (which is basically just a spreadsheet with date/time/water level) which I can open in quickplot to compare with the modelled results?

PS: I thought of another stupid question - what would be a suitable time period for comparing modelled water levels with observations? Should I use the whole 6 month record (since I have it?) or just pick a subset of time? The end purpose of the model will be to look at the impact of storms under sea level rise on the morphology of a breached barrier system.

It looks like the boundary conditions were properly generated, but the GUI has some problems showing them. Are you running Dashboard through Matlab or an executable?

With respect to your other questions:

Delft Dashboard generates tidal boundary conditions from the Topex / Poseidon dataset. The default is using TPXO 7.2, which is a dataset generated by Oregon State University, and it contains data on 11 tidal constituents (M2, S2 etc.) on a global 0.25 degree grid. The tide stations available in Dashboard are not used for the generation of tidal boundaries.

Delft-TIDE is a tidal analysis and prediction package. It is used to either do a tidal analysis on observed time series, or create a time series based on known tidal constituents. In many ways it is similar to T-Tide, the Matlab package, that is used more frequently.

For visualization of observed time series, it is best to write them into the so-called TEKAL format which you can load into Quickplot. The TEKAL format for time series looks something like this:

* column 1 : Date
* column 2 : Time
* column 3 : WL

The 4th line in this file is the block name, it can be anything you want. The 5th line contains the number of rows and columns in the dataset (in this case 6 rows and 3 columns).

If you have the 6 months, I would use those. It's probably a good idea to perform a tidal analysis on the time series from the model and the observations, and compare the tidal constituents. This will tell you more about how the model is doing than just comparing time series. For tidal analysis, typically the longer the period you use, the more accurate things become.

If you want to compute the surge in the model and the observations, you carry out the following steps for both the model and the observations:

1) perform a tidal analysis on the time series
2) use tidal constituents from analysis to create predicted time series for the same period
3) subtract predicted values from computed/observed values to get the time series of the surge

Ok, let me make sure I understand. So I take my 6 month time series, and use Delft 3D-TIDE to calculate the astronomical constituents (eg. perform "tidal analysis"). Then I take those tidal constituents and run Delft3D flow over the 6 month time series. For the third step, though, ("subtract predicted values from computed/observed values to get the time series of the surge"), how is getting the time series of the surge useful in the model validation process? Maybe I'm just confused about model validation in general... Can you point me in the direction of any good literature?

Also, yes, I am running dashboard through matlab. Why is the TOPEX dataset not more suitable than my tide gauge data set for model validation?

All probably very stupid questions...

After skimming the Delft 3D tide manual, I am even more confused :-( How does Delft 3D tide link in with Delft 3D flow? I understand you are using it to generate the tidal constituents, but how do you end up using this to force the model at the boundaries? What exactly are the steps involved? Also, what's the story with astronomical corrections and calibration? How is calibration different from validation, and which comes first? Also, how is Delft 3D tide different from Delft 3D TRIANA? Ahhh help!
