intro story Coast / Estuary

Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition.

Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Coupling Dwave with DflowFM 3D possible?

Dear Delft3D users,

I have to create a complex model by coupling a 3D DFlow model (with influence of air temperature) with a Dwave model for the dilution of a thermal plume and the sediments transport. I have few questions :
- Is it better to use Delft3D 4.01 or Delft3D FM? I’m answering if the new Delft3D FM is stable enough?
- I began my model with Delft3D FM, I try to impose a 3D sink/source by modifying my SourceSink01.pli with a third column (for the z coordinate), but when I try to run my model using Delta Shell, the source/sink in 2D is maintained and the third column is deleted of my *.pli. So I look in the Manual, and I would like to run my scenario using a batch file to avoid overwriting files, but there is talk of the Windows dflowfm-cli package in the manual. Is it mandatory to have this package to run with a batch file? How can I have this package?

I realize that’s a lot of questions, so I thank you in advance to answer me most quickly that you can, because my study have very short deadlines…

Have a nice day,

Antoine

Dear Antoine,

Regarding your first question: this year, and also the next we expect still a lot of ongoing research regarding 3D flow-wave interaction, and this is not yet available in the officially supported release of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite 2016.

For pure 3D hydrodynamics modelling, you can consider applying for our Beta Testing Programme, see:
https://www.deltares.nl/en/software/delft3d-flexible-mesh-suite/#7
This could also involve the command line (cli) package.

For 3D flow-wave modelling I advise you to use Delft3D 4.01

Best regards,
Arthur

Dear Arthur,

I thank you for your quick answer. I will create my model with Delft3D 4.01 pending the finished version.

Best regards,

Antoine

Dear Arthur,

Since not all functionality is available when using Delta Shell to start a simulation, I need to do a calculation using batch scripts. A model can be run from the command line using the D-Flow FM Command Line Interface (CLI), flowfm-cli.exe. I am a little bit confused on how to get “command line (cli) package”. Can you guide me how to have access to this package?
Thanks,
Mina

Dear Mina,

Could you please contact support@deltaressystems with your contact details and affiliation, we can then make the CLI package available via FTP.

Best,
Arthur
