Coast / Estuary

Coastal systems are among the most dynamic physical systems on earth and are subject to a large variety of forces. The morphodynamic changes occurring to coastlines worldwide are of great interest and importance. These changes occur as a result of the erosion of sediments, its subsequent transport as bed load or suspended load, and eventual deposition. 
 
Estuaries are partly enclosed water bodies that have an open connection to the coast. Estuaries generally have one or more branching channels, intertidal mudflats and/or salt marshes. Intertidal areas are of high ecological importance and trap sediments (sands, silts, clays and organic matter).
Within the Delft3D modelling package a large variation of coastal and estuarine physical and chemical processes can be simulated. These include waves, tidal propagation, wind- or wave-induced water level setup, flow induced by salinity or temperature gradients, sand and mud transport, water quality and changing bathymetry (morphology). Delft3D can also be used operationally e.g. storm, surge and algal bloom forecasting.

Hi all,

Can anyone help me in how to convert a meteorological input file (space varying wind data in netcdf format) to a Delft3D compatible (meteo file). Actually i have gone through the manual but cant quite make it. They are telling the file generated by some offline program. What is it actually? I want to use the space varying wind field option (either in equidistant grid or curvilinear grid) in FLOW module. I am attaching my files herewith. Please help.

Hi Partho,

When the manual refers to "some offline program", it means that the file is not generated by RGFGRID, QUICKIN, or GUI. These ascii files have to be generated by some other means; some people use Excel, others write their own program in MATLAB, Fortran, or some other programming language. If you have access to MATLAB, you can use the attached function. It works for the files that you provided, but may need adjustment for other files.

Hi Bert,


I am trying to evaluate the wind contribution to hydrodynamics conditions during a storm, but I have difficulty with input meteo files.
I have made this meteo files in MATLAB following the user manual instructions , but this error message appears in the -tri-diag file:
***ERROR Meteo input version 1.03 is not supported. Expecting version 1.03. Check the DELFT-FLOW User Manual for changes.
***ERROR Flow exited abnormally

Hi tomas,
i dont know, if you are using an equidistatn wind grid, in this case, you dont need write te version of the grid, it is only for the atmospheric computational grid.
Yo can see in the flow mannual A.3.8.2 De fined on an equidistant grid.

Does your input file contain an unexpected (invisible) character in front of or behind the number 1.03? For example a tab-character.

I have some question in running model with space varying wind field. I gave 3 correspording files namely #u_wnd.amu#,#v_wnd.amv#,#p_wnd.amp# in Additional Parameters data group. And when I run the model, these is an error "*** ERROR NaN found after 1 timestep(s)". I check the file and have no idea where is wrong. Could you please help me.

Hi Wendy,

As the error suggests it seems that there is some NaN-value(s) in your input file(s). Did you check your input files thoroughly for NaN-values (also the non-meteo files like bct, bcc etc.)?

Wendy,

This error can have many causes. Gradually undress your model to find out what it is caused by, e.g. remove wind to see whether it runs without the wind forcing. A first guess would be a NaN value in the bathymetry, since the error shows up after the first timestep.

*** ERROR Meteo input: Incorrect time unit given, expecting minutes or hours, but getting hours
*** ERROR Flow exited abnormally
I dont know what is wrong in my wind u and wind v and pressure files, for example this is one of the time headers i am using:
TIME = 18264.00 hours since 2008-12-01 00:00:00 +00:00
Could you please help me
