intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Problem compiling on UBUNTU 11.10

Hi there,

i'm trying to compile in ubuntu 11.10 and i'm having some problems. When i make it, i got the error:

/usr/bin/ld: ../../../../../utils_lgpl/meteo/packages/meteo/src/libmeteo.a(meteo_data.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `__meteo_data_MOD_meteomessage' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC

Can anyone help me?

thanks.

Hi Mariana,

The -fPIC flag is needed when creating 64-bit binaries.
Have a look at the script "src/build.sh" for an example of setting the -fPIC flag.

Hi,

I try to use the build.sh but i got that same error, i'm putting the make.log file here. i'm still not understanding whats happening. I've take a look at the build.sh and i can use a lot of compilers i've tryed to use -intel11 -64bit and -gnu -64bit options but also doesn't work.

any more ideas? Can it be the ubuntu version that i'm using.

thanks for the help,

i'll keep trying here.

RE: Problem compiling on UBUNTU 11.10

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem as Mariana here. As far as I can tell, when we execute ./build.sh the option '-fPIC' is included in these commands:

CFLAGS='$flags -fPIC $CFLAGS' \
CXXFLAGS='$flags -fPIC $CXXFLAGS' \
FFLAGS='$flags -fPIC $FFLAGS' \
FCFLAGS='$flags -fPIC $FCFLAGS' \

In my Makefile the commands that use -fPIC are:

CFLAGS = -pthread -O2 -fPIC
CXX = g++ -fPIC
CXXCPP = g++ -fPIC -E
CXXFLAGS = -pthread -O2 -fPIC
FCFLAGS = -O2 -fPIC -fopenmp -ffree-line-length-none -cpp
FFLAGS = -O2 -fPIC -fopenmp

Does anybody see something wrong here? because still I am getting the message:

/usr/bin/ld: ../../../../../utils_lgpl/meteo/packages/meteo/src/libmeteo.a(meteo_data.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `__meteo_data_MOD_meteomessage' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
../../../../../utils_lgpl/meteo/packages/meteo/src/libmeteo.a: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Where else in the Makefile shold -fPIC be used?

Thanks,
SJ

Edit: I believe the problem is described in http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/howtos/index.xml?part=1&chap=3 (see case 4), but I am not sure how to try the solutions described there.

Dear Mariana and Sergio,

Sergio: Looking at your Makefile lines: build.sh also adds the flag -m64 when compiling a 64bit version. For the rest they look fine to me.

Mariana: Looking at your make.log, the meteo files are not recompiled because the related binaries are already present. Try one of the following two options:

1) Using build.sh, starting with a clean directory:
make ds-clean
./build.sh -gnu -64bit

2) Assuming a proper Linux/Autotools installation (optionally see "src/README"):
make ds-clean
./autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=`pwd`
make ds-install

Adri
