intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

How can i define wave time series at open boundaries?

Dear All,

In my test case i have three open boundaries and i want to apply three different time series of wave data at related boundaries.
It would be grateful if any body can help me how can i do that.

Best Regards

Greetings,
I have had success using the TPAR file for uniform conditions along a boundary. The definition/format for the TPAR file is in the appendix of the wave manual.

In the GUI, under boundaries, you would select "from file" under specification of spectra, rename your TPAR file to have a *.bnd extension, and then you can select your TPAR file. You would need a separate TPAR file for each boundary you wish to use a time series for.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Joe

Hi Joe

Thank you for your consideration. I tried to do what you suggested but unfortunately the model crashed by this message:

D:\INCO\Movazafi\storm-beach\Modeling\Nushahr Model\New>rem exit
>>...End of SWAN run
*** ERROR: file 'norm_end' expected to signal a correct SWAN calculation

I attached my setup model. It is very kind of you if you can have a look to it to find any mistakes.

take a look at your TPAR files, they are tab delimited instead of space delimited, that made a difference for me. One other thing that might cause a problem is that your reference date is one day sooner than your start date, the 15th instead of the 16th. I believe when using the TPAR file it looks at the reference date in the wave model and expects that as your first date in the TPAR file.

Hi Joseph

Thank you for your comments. I did both of your suggestions but unfortunately the problem still exists. would you please check the boundary definition section of my test case?Actually i am not sure about the definition of boundary start and end points.

Best Regards

Hi Zahra,

I'd try switching it to the define boundary by orientation and then choosing the applicable direction that the boundary corresponds to, to see if it runs that way..if it does then you can refine your boundaries later.
Cheers,
Joe
