D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.

I am hoping someone can clarify which variables in the WAVE module are calculated and exported at grid cell centers versus grid cell corners? I am processing my data in Matlab - when I read in the grid (using the 'wlgrid.m' function) the X and Y coordinates given correspond to grid cell corners. I think that the depth data in the .dep file also corresponds to grid cell corners (although there is an additional dummy row in both dimensions). Is the wave height, period, and other parameters also calculated and exported at the grid cell corners (I am using 'qpread.m' to read in the data to Matlab)? I thought that SWAN calculated wave parameters at the grid cell center (but I could be wrong).

When I use QUICKPLOT to view the data, it appears that the wave parameters are calculated at the corners. I just want to be clear on this because the manual indicates that some variables are not defined at the corners but I wasn't able to find which variables. There is more information in the FLOW manual on grid center vs corners for the FLOW parameters but I am running the WAVE module standalone.
