intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.
The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

We have launched a new website (still under construction so expect continuous improvements) and a new forum dedicated to Delft3D Flexible Mesh.

error with Delft3D GUI Delft3D 4.03.00 Windows

I am having problems to operate with your 'Delft3D GUI Delft3D 4.03.00 Windows for source code users’. I am running a 64bit laptop.
I installed the pre-compile code from the Install-Shield.exe . The installation process runs ok, and the delft3d_menu.bat is created on my desktop. Additionally, the folder Deltares is created in Program files, containing both Delft3 D4.03.00 (for waq) and Delft3 D4.03.01 folders.
The delft3d menu is open correctly, but when starting a simulation I get the following message:
<Executable “d_hydro.exe” not found on directory “C:/ProgramFiles/Deltares/Delft3D 4.03.01/win64/flow2d3d/bin”>
This and other files are missing from Delft3 D4.03.01 folder. So I was wondering what went wrong with the installation of the new delft3d version. I already installed successfully other versions.
Was this error reported before?

Hi Rita,

What you installed is the GUI of Delft3D without the precompiled binaries, which you supposed to compile the open source code by yourself. For the pre-compiled version, you need to have the service package. Refer to:, or contact
