D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.

No SMproc output being written

Hi, I have a fresh install of Delft3D and I modified example 01 by adding the line "FlNcdf = #maphisdro#" to my mdf file. This allows me to get netCDF output. However, when looking at the resulting netCDF file I don't see any temperature or salinity variables, or in fact any data that is specified by SMproc in the mdf file (even though this is a string of "Y" characters). And I find that whether I set SMproc to all "N" or all "Y" values makes no difference to my resulting netCDF file. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is there some other flag in my mdf file that stops SMproc from doing it's thing?

Hi Nicholas,

First of all, you need to include temperature and salinity in the computation (better to turn it on through GUI), then you can use SMproc to set the output options.

Thanks very much for the response. I'm running Delft3D through Linux, is there a text file flag somewhere to turn this on? I don't see one in the mdf file.

Hi Nicholas,

Yes, there is a flag in the mdf-file to switch it on, but that is not enough: you also have to specify initial and boundary conditions and, optionally, additional processes. This is very delicate. You can't do that without the GUI. You can prepare your computation on Windows with the GUI and then copy the input files to Linux to run it.
