intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Write output for specified layers

Hi all,

I've read in the release notes for Delft3D-Flow version 5.00.04.1520 that there is a new functionality to write output for specified layers only. How can these layers be specified in the mdf-file? Is there a keyword?

Thanks!
Stefan

Update on this:

I checked the source code and found the keywords 'SMlay' for map files and 'SHlay' for history files. Using these keywords in the MDF-file I was able to specify the layers (e.g. 'SMlay = 1,4,10' for output of layers 1, 4 and 10 in the map file).

Unfortunately Deflt3D crashed if I specified to many layers. Changing the size of the message string in the source code fixed the issue.

Hi Stefan,

What exactly did you change in the source code? Looking in file rdprfl.90, I do not expect such an error unless you specified more than 80 output layers.

Adri

Hi Adri,

actually I was able to specify a maximum of only 17 or 18 layers. The message in the diag-file reads like this:

*** MESSAGE Map output is written for layer(s) 33 35 37 38 39 etc.

(Edit: The blanks between the layer numbers are deleted here in the forums)

So every layer takes 12 characters and the message string in rdprfl.90 had a size of 256 characters. Maybe a more elegant way than to increase the size of the message string would be to cut the white space between the layer numbers.

Regards,

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I solved this in revision 1799.

Thanks.
