intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Flow Input button in GUI not responding

Trying to install and run flow2d3d for the first time,

I've compiled the latest tag version of the source code (2163) successfully, and downloaded the GUI. The gui starts fine, and I can click on the "flow" button to start that module, but when I click on the "flow input" button, nothing happens (the next GUI is not launched). No error messages or any other response appears to occur. Any ideas? I've tried re-compiling and re-installing the GUI, and re-booting. Not a software expert by any stretch, so any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks, Matt

Hi Matthew,

Did you obtain a license file and install the "DS License Manager"? See (while being signed in) the "TEMPORARY EXTRA SERVICE" at the top of this page.

Adri

Hi Adri,

Yes, I've installed the license with the DS liscense manager. The GUI starts fine and says the license is valid until March 2014. The main startup page works fine, and I can click on "Flow" to get to the flow menu. Only from that menu, when I hit the "FLOW INPUT" button is there a problem, as nothing happens. It looks like maybe this is the same issue Michael Souza is having (see previous thread)?

FYI, I'm using the source code tagged version 2354 (https://svn.oss.deltares.nl/repos/delft3d/tags/research/2354), and compiling the d_hydro_open_source_vs2010_intel13 version since I'm using the intel fortran 2013 package. Running on Windows 7. Had no errors upon compiling the source code, and got the "successful build" message. Went through the process on two different machines (both Windows 7) and have the same issue on both.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matthew,

Tagged version "research/2354", does not work in combination with Delft3D GUI version 4.00.02 (and older). Currently, you can only use it with the release candidate GUI "Delft3D 4.01.00.rc.01". I added this warning to the text.

Also please be aware that this research version did not pass the FLOW testbench.

Hi Adri,

Still not getting it to work using tagged version research/2354 and Delft3D 4.01.00.rc.01. I've been following the discussion with Michael Souza, and looks like the best current solution may be to use GUI version 4.00.02 and compile an older version of the source code in order to use the flow tools. Is the 4.00.02 GUI availalbe for download? (I've sent a request to the same e-mail account from which I received the download instructions for newer version).

Thanks again for your help. Looking forward to getting to the fun stuff soon!

Matt

Adri,

I'm facing the same problem described by Matthew - FLOW INPUT button doesn't work. Also, the GUI is suppose to run independently from the delft3d-hydro binaries, right?

cheers,

Roberto.

Hi Matthew and Roberto,

There is a dll missing in the FLOW part of Delft3D GUI 4.01.00.rc.01. This is repaired in 4.01.00.rc.02, currently available.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Adri

Thanks Adri. Success at last! Version 4.01.00.rc.02 is working great and I'm enjoying working through the tutorials. Thanks for your help.

Hello!
Dear Adri,
I've completed all the steps in your instructions and I started to work with Delft 3D, with some help from a colleague that already has the license and has been working with it for the past years.
We seem to have a problem, though. The 'FLOW INPUT' and 'WAVE INPUT' buttons don't work.
I think I have the same problem here. The version I received is delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.01 .
Can you please support me with the new version?
Thank you very much!

Hi Juliana,

You can download delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.02 exactly the same way as with delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.01. Your problem should be fixed then.

Adri

Hi Adri,

I have the same problem ...

I've compiled in linux the trunk version of the Delft3d source code successfully, and downloaded the GUI Delft3D-openhydromorpho_waq-4.00.01-02.i386.rpm. The gui starts fine, but when I click on the FLOW button nothing happens.

Any idea ?? Thanks in advance

Hi Catalina,

Delft3D-FLOW version 6.xx is too new for GUI version 4.00.01. It should work with Delft3D-FLOW version 5.xx (for example the latest tagged 5 version: https://svn.oss.deltares.nl/repos/delft3d/tags/5.01.00.2163).

Adri

Hello,
I have the same problem as the person in the last post you responded to,

I've installed from Delft3D-hydro_morpho_waq-4.00.01-02.i386.rpm. Also installed MCRInstaller.bin, tutorials for 4.00.01.
onto Ubuntu 14.04. Had to install i386 libraries as well and it finally worked, was able to install and run it.
My license file "FL######any.lic" is in the delft3d folder.
The GUI starts fine, but when I click on the FLOW button nothing happens.
I don't think the versions are incompatible as per the last poster's problem:

flow_gui
------------------
Deltares, Delft3D-FLOW GUI, Version 3.42.00.18354, Sep 27 2011, 14:24:54

libflow2d3d.so
------------------
Deltares, Delft3D-FLOW Version 4.00.04.757, Aug 23 2011, 18:10:23

I can give more info, but if any thing comes to mind off hand about what's wrong, input/suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Corinne,

Please think about switching to a newer version.
I'm not sure up to what level the old Linux GUI is supported. I'll check that.

You should be able to work around the problem by using a batch file to start the calculation. Example scripts are in the examples directory (For Delft3D-FLOW 4.00.04.757: see the related tag).

If you get stucked related to writing a run script, please post the problem here.

Regards,

Adri
