intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Delft3D Debugging Problem

Dear All,

I'm trying to compile and debug the Delft3D source code provided in:

https://svn.oss.deltares.nl/repos/delft3d/tags/5.01.00.2163

I have VS 2012 with IVF 2013 installed in Windows 8 32-bit OS. As referred to the README provided, I selected the solution configuration to be release and the compilation went well with the result as "========== Build: 87 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped =========="

Later I proceeded to follow the instruction of "Debugging in Microsoft VS" in README by using Example 1 - E:\Delft3D 5.01\examples\01_standard.
After I clicked "Debug - Start new instance", I did not see any calculation is running.
I pause/break the DOS screen, it showed

d_hydro ABORT: Configuration file "config_flow2d3d.xml" does not have a Deltares Hydro root element.

Can anyone aid me to solve this problem? Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Warm regards,
WaiKiat

Hi Wai Kiat,

You better start be removing the space from the directory name "Delft3D 5.01". Some scripts don't like that.

Just to be sure: you are able to run example "01_standard" as is?

Your "config_flow2d3d.xml" file should look like this:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='iso-8859-1'?>
        <DeltaresHydro start="flow2d3d">
            <flow2d3d
                MDFile          = 'f34.mdf'
                >
            </flow2d3d>
        </DeltaresHydro>

This differs from the "config_d_hydro.xml" used in version 6.xx (and currently in the trunk).

Regards,

Adri

Dear Adri,

Thank you so much for you help.
Just now I tried using "debug" instead of "release" in solution configuration for both Dealf3D versions 5.00.10.1983 and 5.01.00.2163.
The compilations went well.

Later I followed the instructions to run example 01_standard.
Attached is the calculation popped out, I suppose it worked well.
Is trih-f34.dat the output from the simulation?

By the way, what are the suitable applications/software to read the output?

Cheers,
WaiKiat

Hi Wai Kiat,

trih-f34.dat is one of the output files. See the manuals for more info. You can use QuickPlot to view it. Please follow the instructions of "TEMPORARY EXTRA SERVICE" (only visible while being signed in) to obtain a setup including QuickPlot (free of charge).
