intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Compiling, but not running examples

Dear all,
trust you are doing well.

I have been struggling to compile the software, but have finally got a compiled version with no errors, but many warnings.

Q1: Is it ok to have warnings and no errors? I guess it depends on the warnings?
Q2: When I run the standard example 1 which normally has no problems, I get an error that I have not got the libexpat.dll installed, and that I should re-install the software? (I have provided a snapshot).

Anyhow, these are probably basic newbie errors, but I would appreciate some assistance.

Many thanks in advance, have a good day,
cheers,
Clint

Hi Clinton,

A1: Yes, I'm afraid it's "ok" to have warnings. Removing them is on our to do list.
A2: Having compiled the source code (release configuration in Visual Studio), the examples should run without any copying around of binaries (or examples). Looking at the path in your snapshot, I expect that directory "Libraries\Documents\Delft_Repository_updated\bin\win32\flow2d3d\bin" contains both "libexpat.dll" and "d_hydro.exe". If it doesn't: did you move the binaries, source code or examples to another location? If it does: do you use the latest tagged version?

Regards,

Adri

Many thanks for the reply and input Adri.
I have set up the compiling on a separate machine to where I download using th SVN.
So I did move the SRC file to another maching for compiling, then back to my machine, maybe something went wrong in the process as I can't find the libexpat file. I'll try set up the SVN on the other machine, and give it a go, and see what happens.
I used the : 'https://svn.oss.deltares.nl/repos/delft3d/tags/2399' Maybe this caused a fault?
Thanks again for the help Adri,
have a good afternoon.

Hi Adri, just a quick thank you.
Turned out that transferring the files around caused the problems.
Once I kept the downloading path with SVN and compiling all in one location,
all the files appreared, and everything runs smoothly.
Many thanks for the assistance and time taken to help.
Have a good day,
Clint
