D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.

Hi all,

I am encountering an error that I don't think I've seen before. I am trying to run a model with a harmonic tidal signal at the seaward boundary, but I keep getting the error:

*** ERROR Time-function ' (n) end B [-]' not yet implemented, please contact code supplier
*** ERROR Flow exited abnormally


My upstream boundary is a total discharge boudary, and the two sides are neuman water level boundaries. The model runs fine if the seaward boundary is a time series water level. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I feel like I'm missing something silly but I don't know what it is. I'm attaching my .mdf, and the files pertaining to my boundary.

I appreciate any help

Hi Christopher,

It seems that one of your input files is wrongly formatted. The message is generated because the following line is expected:
time-function 'non-equidistant'

but it finds:
time-function '(n) end B [-]'

Probably in the bcc file.
I don't expect this error when the input is created with the GUI (or at least checked by the GUI).

Hi Adri,

Sorry to reply after so long here. I had a workaround that was functioning for a while, but now I'd like to use the harmonic boundary conditions correctly. I thought that the error was because of a mismatch in the FLOW and GUI versions that I am using, but after I fixed the mismatch I am still getting a similar error.

All of the attached input files were written by the GUI, so I think that they should work. But if you look at the diagnostic file, you can see that I got an error with the time function.

This simulation runs just fine if I take the harmonic boundary condition out and do a time series instead. But I get this error as soon as I switch to a harmonic condition at the seaward boundary.

Hi Christopher,

Something seems to go wrong when combining the different boundary condition files into one testcase. Can you post the full set of input files (zipped) showing this problem?

Hi Christopher,

I noticed you are running in parallel. There is a known issue related to parallel and Total discharge boundaries, see release notes. Your problem might be related to that.

Does your model run without using parallel?

We are currently working on this. Trunk revision 2941 is partly tested and might solve this.
