intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Get coastal line and bathymetry in the internet!

Hi every one!
I am an undergraduate student in oceanography. I'm learning to use Delft3D software, and try to setup an applycation in my country.
I often get the coastal line and bathymetry data in a page GSDA:GSDA-XMS Wiki to draw a grid and get water depth for my application. But recent I can not get data in this page, and I can not setup the model.
The I ask for Who know any page to get coastal line and bathymetry data in the internet, Can you share your knowledge? Help me!

Hi Hai,

As far as coastal line goes (I imagine you assume a land boundary file .ldb), you can easily make one using Google Earth and OpenEarthTools. Check the screencast from Delatres at: http://content.oss.deltares.nl/delft3d/Webinar/DeBoer_OET/OET_GdB_14082013_HQ.html
They will teach you how to do the above.

Regarding bathymetry, I can't help you much as I don't know where you are trying to model. But maybe check out if there is a digital chart of your region. You can use it as a good starting point for your bathymetry data. If not, maybe someone else can suggest a good resource center for this type of data.

Best of Luck!
