intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

What version of SWAN is D3D WAVE 3.05.30013 based on?

Hi .

What version of SWAN is D3D WAVE 3.05.30013 based on? Is it on 40.91? The manual does not mention it anywhere.

As an additional question, is it possible to substitute the D3D wave executable for any particular OMP SWAN version? I am guessing not, but I thought it worth a try.

I am interested in trying to include wave damping from vegetation that SWAN 40.91 has, in to D3D online flow-wave-flow simulations. It is always possible to adapt batch files to swap executables, but from my understanding D3D WAVE is not a vanilla version of SWAN, which may therefore cause issues.....

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben,

The swan version there used is: swan_4072ABCDE openMP or MPI version.

Of course it is possible, I would say it is easy, to change the version of swan version you want to use. For those new features in swan, the present version of wave probably won't prepare the new added keywords there. But it is always possible to add that part in the wave code. I did some code change of this type before. Welcome for furher discussion over this.

Regards,

Qinghua

Hi Qinghua,

I would gladly change and recompile the wave model in order to gain access to features in more recent versions of SWAN.

Initially I was more interested in the 'quick-and-dirty' approach to see if I could simply specify a 'vanilla' version of SWAN by adapting the batch files (which it turns out is pretty easy to do). However 'vanilla' versions of SWAN do not appear to output binary files of the type used by D3D, which I suppose is to be expected.

Happy to enter discussions on adapting the code within the wave model. May I ask if there is a reasonably straight-forward way of including the additional fortran modules (just for the vegetation part) within the source code for D3D wave, or would it require multiple changes over .f90 files?

Kind regards,

Ben

Hi,

I'm just wondering if this capability has been added to Delft3D WAVE now, as I would like to run online coupled flow wave with vegetation included.
