intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

runnning simulation under linux - Ubuntu

Hello everybody!!

I am pretty experienced with delf3d under Windows OS, and now i just wanted to test Delft3d under Linux ubunt 12.04 (the latest stable release)

I followed the instructions in downloading and compiling the source code and i was very please to succeed!! emoticonemoticon
Following the instruction in the Webinar i used:
ubuntu 12.04
as Operative system
Gfortran as compiler
all the required packages as listed in the FAQs
delft3d 5.00.10.1983 release

The computer i use is an
HP-compaq-elite 64bit

delft 3d is installed in a directory called.
/home/ubuntu/utn/Delft3d_repository/delft3d_repository/

And now..

I tried to run the example test case 01_standard and

1 - if i execute the batch run_flow2d3d_xml.sh it works
2 - if i execute the batch run_flow2d3d.sh it does not works

I tried to play around with the sh file to change environ paths with no results
I presume this is somehow related to some configuration problem (otherwise it should not simulate with the xml bash files) but i really do not understand what i am doing wrong..

can anybody help me?

Thank you all

Alesandro

PS
another question.
under Windows i use extensively total commander , is ther something equivalent in Linux?

Hi Alessandro,

It's better to switch to a newer versions, for example the latest tagged version: https://svn.oss.deltares.nl/repos/delft3d/tags/3058

Some problems related to compiling on Linux are solved between the version you use and the one mentioned above.

The way to start an execution has changed. Check the release notes. But the examples are adapted and should run "out of the box".

Nothing can beat Total Commander.
With "WinSCP" you can create on your Windows machine a "Total Commander"-like view on your Linux system.

Regards,

Adri

Hallo adri,

thank you for the answer!

I'll follow your tip an i will re install the newer version of delft 3d

Some other questions as i am not so familiar with linux:

what should i do to uninstall the current version of delft3d?
Is it sufficient simply to delete the source, compiled and execuable files in the directory where D3D is installed?

Thank you again

Hi Alessandro,

Yes, just deleting the Delft3D stuff is enough. There are no permanent changes to environment settings etcetera.

Adri
