D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.

Hello guys,

I am trying to calibrate my DELFT3D WAVE model and for that I need to tune my physical model parameters in order to obtain the best results against measurements.

I known that is possible to change the depth-induced breaking parameters and non linear triad interactions parameters as well as change the bottom friction coefficient on DELFT3D WAVE interface.

However, it is not possible to specify or change the white-capping settings (e.g. dissipation coefficient) on DELFT3D WAVE Interface, which is a very influent parameters while calibrating a wave model. DELFT3D WAVE Interface allows to choose 'koeman' or 'van der westhuysen' model but does not allow to change, for example, the respective dissipation coefficients...which is a serious limitation for a proper wave model calibration.

I would like to know if it is possible to change that white-capping settings somewhere (e.g. on the mdw file), in order to improve my results against measurements. I am sure that DELFT3D reads a file containing the white-capping formulations, which might be modified...

I am also sure that a lot of people have the same question...

Hi Joao,

You are right, that is currently not implemented in Delft3D-WAVE.

You have two options:
  • WAVE is open source: you can add it yourself.
  • WAVE starts SWAN by executing the script "swan.bat" (on Linux: ""). On that point, you can change the prepared SWAN input file yourself. You can do this manually or by calling a self-written script.
