intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Boundary file

Hi,

I am trying to force DELFT3D-WAVE with a space-varying spectral file produced by SWAN.
This is a time-dependent and has a lot of co-ordinates locations, but in the manual is wrote that the co-ordinates of locations in the 1D and 2D les are ignored when SWAN reads this.

It is possible to force DELFT with this kind of file? If yes, how?

Best regards,

Dear Renan,

This is indeed possible. Can you send me your input files and I'll show you how to do so.

Dear Jan-Joost Schouten,

Ok. I send the input files attached.
I left only four time steps, because the size of the forcing file.

Thanks,
Renan

Dear Jan-Joost Schouten,

I have met similar problems with Renan, I am trying to run Delft3D-Wave with a space-varying spectral file,
can you show me how to so? Attached is my input.

Thanks

Wu

Dear Wu,

You need to put this keywords at the end of your .mdw file

[Boundary]
Name = Boundary1
Definition = fromsp2file
OverallSpecfile = Typ1007_Kor.bnd

Like the files attached.

Dear Renan Ribeiro,

Thanks very much for your instructions. I tried as you told me, however, when I imported the .MDW file, an input warning appeared: "Invalid value for keyword Definition in data group Boundary 0: fromsp2file", it seems that the keyword 'fromsp2file' cannot be recognized by Delft3D GUI.

I thought it was because of the old version GUI I was using, so I installed the Delft3D GUI 4.00.01 together with compiled source code 5.00.00.1234, the same error appeared when I imported the .MDW file. So what is the problem? Did you meet such problems?

Regards

Wu

Hi Wu,

You are right, the Delft3D GUI don't recognize this keyword. Did you try to run the .mdw without opening at GUI?
So what you need to do is setup all your project and at the end put this keyword and run the .mdw without opening at GUI.
Let me know if it works.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem trying to create an input file so that the wave boundary is constant in space, but changes in time. Could you please help me with how this file should be formatted?

Thanks,
Mallory
