intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

Meteo files missing values not recognized

I am attempting to use a meteorological forcing file (wind speed and pressure) which includes some missing values. The missing values are all coded as -9999, however the program is interpreting the flagged values as actual wind speed and pressure values. I am currently using Delft3D-FLOW Version 4.00.04.757. I cannot determine why these values are not ignored.

The header I am using on the meteorological files is as follows:

For Pressure:
FileVersion = 1.03
Filetype = meteo_on_equidistant_grid
NODATA_value = -9999
n_cols = 170
n_rows = 97
grid_unit = degree
x_llcorner = -96
y_llcorner = 26
dx = 0.3
dy = 0.3
n_quantity = 1
quantity1 = air_pressure
unit1 = mbar

For Wind in the x-direction:
FileVersion = 1.03
Filetype = meteo_on_equidistant_grid
NODATA_value = -9999
n_cols = 170
n_rows = 97
grid_unit = degree
x_llcorner = -96
y_llcorner = 26
dx = 0.3
dy = 0.3
n_quantity = 1
quantity1 = x_wind
unit1 = m s-1

Any advice would be great. Thank you in advance,

Hi James,

It has been corrected very long time ago... I cannot remember which version it was. I strongly suggest you to try the new release version, released in July, 2014. It should not be a problem here.

This error has not fixed in the flow2d3d, version 6.02.01.5425 (open code). My case is space varying wind and pressure on a separate curvilinear grid. NODATA_value is not recognized.

Hi Vu Vinh,

same issue with a slightly earlier version 6.00.00.2367!
Any progress on your side? Did you try to upgrade to a more recent version?

Cheers,

Oliver
