intro story D-Flow FM

D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.
An overview of the current developments can be found here.

The D-Flow FM - team would be delighted if you would participate in discussions on the generation of meshes, the specification of boundary conditions, the running of computations, and all kinds of other relevant topics. Feel free to share your smart questions and/or brilliant solutions!

getting error when running coupled flow-wave model

Hi,

I am trying to make a storm surge model using a coupled flow and wave model in my pc (Windows 7-64bit), however, while running the model I am getting an error:

swan_4072ABCDE_del_w32_i11_omp stopped working

I checked the directory and the swan_4072ABCDE_del_w32_i11_omp file is existing.
I also tried running the same model on another PC (Windows 8-64bit) and it is getting the same error but when i tried running the same model in my laptop (Windows 7-64bit) it works fine and finished successfully.

Please help. The laptop and 2PCs have the same version of delft3d installed: delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.07.

Hi Princess,

The most common error:
If you start Delft3D-GUI via a self created short cut, this short cut should NOT point to "c:\Program Files (x86)\Deltares\Delft3D 4.01.00...\win32\menu\bin\d3d_menu.exe" but MUST point to "c:\Program Files (x86)\Deltares\Delft3D 4.01.00...\win32\d3d_menu.bat".
The related problem will not appear when starting Delft3D-GUI via "Microsoft Start button -> All Programs -> Deltares -> Delft3D 4.01.00.... -> Delft3D".

Other suggestions:
- Upgrade to version 4.01.00
- Use the latest tagged version, currently https://svn.oss.deltares.nl/repos/delft3d/tags/4168/
- Does the work directory contain diagnosis files giving more information on what goes wrong? The SWAN related one is normally named swn-diag.<runid> and the FLOW related one tri-diag.<runid>

Adri

Thank you for the reponse. As of now I am using a shortcut and it is directed to open C:\delft3d\win32\d3d_menu.bat
We tried installing the newest version of delft with the latest tag and I am still getting the same error.
The example flow-wave finished successfully.

Attached is the copy of the tri-diag created when running the model as well as the log file.

by the way, swn.diag was not created during the run.

Also, I tried running the flow model and wave model separately (not coupled) and both are working fine. I only get the error when I run it coupled. I also tried running another coupled model and I am still getting the error. attached are the diag files created when running the other model.

Hi Princess,

Looking at the two delft3d.log files you posted:
Something went wrong during the SWAN calculation. I expect that a file named ERROR and/or PRINT is created in the working directory, created by SWAN. These files should contain more information.

Looking to your "tri-diag.inundation_coupled":
Please use a time step that fits with the CFL condition, see the manual section "4.5.3 Time frame".
If reducing the timestep doesn't help: Please analyse your output just before the crash to find out where it goes wrong (space and time) and what goes wrong.

Regards,

Adri

When you talk about something with reference then people listen to you more carefully. The uk dissertation always asks us to do the same and point out only on main topics which helps us more than enough.
