D-Flow Flexible Mesh

D-Flow Flexible Mesh (D-Flow FM) is the new software engine for hydrodynamical simulations on unstructured grids in 1D-2D-3D. Together with the familiar curvilinear meshes from Delft3D 4, the unstructured grid can consist of triangles, pentagons (etc.) and 1D channel networks, all in one single mesh. It combines proven technology from the hydrodynamic engines of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 and adds flexible administration, resulting in:

  • Easier 1D-2D-3D model coupling, intuitive setup of boundary conditions and meteorological forcings (amongst others).
  • More flexible 2D gridding in delta regions, river junctions, harbours, intertidal flats and more.
  • High performance by smart use of multicore architectures, and grid computing clusters.

Initial conditions to nested grids

Hi all,
I'm running a nested grid system, and I have a question regarding the creating of initial conditions file for the nested grids. So my question is: is there any program that creates a initial conditions file from the parent grid? as the nesthd2.m program makes to the boundary conditions file.

Hi Fernando,

How did you create the .ini file for the parent grid? You can use the same approach to create for the nested grid.

I don't know a program/tool that you could read the .ini file from a grid and create another one for a finer grid.

My suggestion is, if there aren't a lot of vertical layers, create the file manually, exporting the condition for a xyz file and interpolate it at the finer grid using QUICKIN.

Another solution is use a matlab tool available at OpenEarth. Look for the makeBctBccIni.m file, but you will need to convert your inicial condition to a specific .mat file with a constant grid spacing.

Hi Renan,
I created the parent grid from a hycom grid, with the same grid space and vertical layers number. To the refined grids I wanna reduce the number of vertical layers, what would oblige me to interpolate vertically. I'll try the routine makeBctBccIni.m.

Hi Fernando,

Answering your questions:
1. No.
2. There are a script that can read the ini file and convert to a .mat file (delft3d_io_ini.m), but not with the format you will need to use at the makeBctBccIni.m.


To use the HyCOM results the easiest way is:

Download the HyCOM results and convert it to the specific .mat format using this script getHYCOM3.m.

You will need to configure your inputs at .mdf normally, and also configure a .xml to call it using this command:
makeBctBccIni('ini','nestxml','nestastrofile.xml')

Take a look at the nestastrofile.xml at OpenEarth for an example.
