DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

How to consider sea level rise escenarios with Delft3D Flow?

Hi, I want to use Delft3D to simulate different escenarios of sea level rise in an estuary.

In a previous work I simulated water levels in a time series format using for the open boundary tide gauge measurements for two different periods of time of the year. Now I would like to use the same input data to simulate different sea level rise escenarios (Since I do not have tidal constituents). Is there a way to incorporate a sea level rise rate in the model?

Hi Esther,

I have had a go at this in the past and simply added a uniform sea-level rise value to all of my tide gauge measurements used to force water level at the boundary. I wanted to look at changes in water level by 2100 under different IPCC sea-level rise predictions, so just added 0.72 m and 0.98 m to all of the values in the .bct files. I am unaware of a more dynamic option than that in Delft!

Thank you, I also has same idea. However, I still doubt about it due to i don't find that method in some references such in SCI paper/journal. 

Do you have some references to support your method/idea? Let me know if you have it.

I have used this article to reference adding incremental sea-level rise projections to a boundary condition: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0117030

This paper used this method to simulate flood inundation using LISFLOOD. I hope that helps!

I've been searching for the examples and found several references to Storm Surge Modeling of Typhoon Haiyan at the Naval Oceanographic Office Using Delft3D and Integrated Biogeomorphological Modeling Using Delft3D
 on Worldwidescience. I hope their examples could be helpful for your research too.
