intro story DELWAQ

DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

'DELWAQ in open source' is our invitation to all leading experts to collaborate in further development and research in the field of water quality, ecology and morphology using Delft3D. Feel free to post your DELWAQ related questions or comments in this dedicated forum space. If you are new to DELWAQ, the tutorial (in the user manual) is a good place to start. A list of DELWAQ related publications is available here.

Hello All,

I'm a newbie in using Delft-3D, and i have some problem to use it.
I have finished my grid and bathmetry and i've some problem to provide the boundaries data to running it in Delft3d-Flow.
How can i find boundaries using .bct format in Delft3D-Flow? i've search it in TOPEX and I couldn't find it.

I really need your help, due to my thesis in my college.
Thank you.

Regards,
Adelina

Dear Adelina

You can add boundary condition in flow menu input/wave input. After that you shoul insert the file extenstion .grd and .enc and .dep. Then you can add boundary condition by clicking on the menu View ->Visualization Area. You will see the domain model/bathymetry. Then click Zoom Box at the location of open boundary (upstream and downstream). Click Edit ->select open boundaries. After that, select Edit Mode-->Click Add. Drag your mouse from left point until rigth point at the grid lines on the open boundaries. Save the file, After that you can add manually data of BC or modify it in .bct or .bcc file.

Hello Adelina,

I'm also stuck with the boundary condition in Delft3d model (for my Lumuss projects). I tried to add boundary conditions and then save in 2D and 3D models. While it works perfectly well in 2D, it gives me an error in 3D. How can it be possible? Have you managed to create a working model?

Hi Adelina.  One easy way to generate a boundary file is in Dashboard, which you can download from the Deltares site.  Load in your model grid, then generate a .bnd and .bca file by pressing the button ....... works really well for most models, although be careful if your model is in shallow / constricted water.

Hi,Phil. I already generate the .grd and .dep file with Delft3D, and I also set the boundary file with it. Now I want to generate the boundary conditions with dashboard, however, I cannot find the way to load my model grid and/or boundary file, and the Boundary Conditions button is gray. Do you have any advice? Thank you.

Liao

Hi,

I am trying to run a model with 1 upstream flow BC, and 2 downstream waterlevel BCs. Does anybody know if Delft3D flow can be used for DS boundary splitting? My model runs, but when I open the output it is empty (dry).

Hi.  See attached screenshot.  So go (1) Domain ...... (2) load in the Grid and .enc.  Then up to the top menu, select (3) Toolbox ----> Model Maker and take it from there.  Good luck.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply, but there is another problem:

Could not open'http://opendap.deltares.nl/thredds/dodsC/opendap/deltares/delftdashboard/tidemodels/tpxo72.nc' with java backend

An error occured while initializing Tide Database toolbox. Toolbox will be made inactive!

I don't know if it is network problem or the website is down.
