DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

How to define initial conditions of BLUE GREENS

Hello, everyone. I am using the WAQ module to simulate water quality of a lake in China. Recently, I have encountered a problem when I was taking the Blue Greens as a substance. The problem is that when defining input I have to fill the initial conditions of “BLUEGRN energy type (BLUEGRN_E;{ no unit})”,” BLUEGRN nitrogen type (BLUEGRN_N;{ no unit})”, “BLUEGRN phosphorus type (BLUEGRN_P;{ no unit})”. I looked up all the reference books but couldn’t find out how to assign these three initial conditions.
Does anyone know how to assign them? Many thanks!

Hello JingWei,

Those are just substances like any other.
You can define their initial conditions through the GUI or directly in the input file (*.inp).
If you do it in the input file, have look at Chapter 8 in this manual.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry I haven't expressed my problem clearly. I'm quite confused with the initial value of of these three substances. I refer to the D_WATER_QUALITY_USER_MANUAL, it explains the three values as 'netrogen limiting conditions', 'phosphorus limiting conditions', 'light limiting conditions'. But I just can't make out what these three mean for they are not the density or something that can be measured. Could you please give some example on them?

The current manuals don't cover the BLOOM module in depth.
I would suggest you read one of those papers:
- Los, F., and J. Wijsman, 2007. Application of a validated primary production model (BLOOM) as a screening tool for marine, coastal and transitional waters. Journal of Marine Systems 64: 201-215
- Blauw, A., H. Los, M. Bokhorst, and P. Erftemeijer, 2009. GEM: a generic ecological model for estuaries and coastal waters. Hydrobiologia 618: 175-198

They give a nice explanation of how BLOOM actually works and what those variables stand for.
