intro story DELWAQ

DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

'DELWAQ in open source' is our invitation to all leading experts to collaborate in further development and research in the field of water quality, ecology and morphology using Delft3D. Feel free to post your DELWAQ related questions or comments in this dedicated forum space. If you are new to DELWAQ, the tutorial (in the user manual) is a good place to start. A list of DELWAQ related publications is available here.

Compiling and Parallel run question

Hi,
I have successfully compiled several version of the source code for windows using VS2008/Intel compiler 11, including the current trunk and the last two 5.0 versions, but can't seem to compile some other versions (e.g. tag 3426 and 3185). When I open the solution file and select the 32 bit release (I don't have a 64 bit compiler) the default startup project is esmfsm_c, if I leave this as the startup I often get a window that pops up saying " Subversion Revision Extractor has stopped working" or in cases where the build fails I also see a second pop up that says "version_number.exe has stopped working". For some releases if I select a different starup project (e.g. flow2d3d) the code compiles without these messages/issue. My question is if the starup project matters and if so what should it be set as? Also, is there and obvious reason why I am getting these messages (and errors) only for some releases?

Secondly, for the releases that compile successfully I am able to run the examples fine (and my previous models) and the results are reasonable, with the exception of the parallel flow wave example. In the parallel bat file provided with the example the comments indicate the first time you run a parallel simulation you need to execute "smpd -install". When I do this I get the message "OpenSCManager Failed: Access is denied. (error 5) Unable to remove the previous installations, install failed". I have administrative privileges so accesses shouldn't be an issue and I have tried this on several computers with the same result. If I just try and run the example using the parallel bat file I get two command windows, one with the standard Delft3D startup text and a second that just says "Unknown option: -d" and the simulation never starts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Dear Jeff,

Should not be a problem with the starting project, you always have to build the whole solution, do you?

For the parallel run, you do have to start the smpd first. Can you try again to open a command window as an administrator? Then run smpd -install. You do need the smpd service in the background to run the parallel runs.

Qinghua,
Thank you for your reply. I forgot about running command window as an administrator, doing so resolved this issue and I can run the parallel example with no problems.
As for the startup project, I am trying to build the whole solution. For what ever reason it does seem to make a difference on my machine.
Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I cannot imagine what the difference is. But would you expect this difference hampers you to run the examples attached with the source code? I expect not. Then you should be able to use the Delft3D model for your study.

Kind regards,

Qinghua

Dear Qinghua and all,

I am Sokly. I have a similar problem regarding parallel run. I have compiled all the code (tag: 5740) without any error. All the executable files are working fine except the parallel run. Before running parallel, I did run smpd.exe first (run as administrator) then when I ran the parallel, I got an error. It said: " unknown option: -d" and I attached the screen log in the attachment.

Thank you for answering and any suggests are really appreciated.

Best regards,

Sokly

Hi Sokly,

Some suggestions:
1. Be sure that when DelftD is build in 64bit mode that you use the 64bit version of smpd. You can check this using the Windows TaskManager: running programs are marked with "*32" when they are 32 bit.
2. Be sure that you followed the steps to install smpd as described in "...\examples\01_standard\run_flow2d3d_parallel.bat" as precise as possible.
3. Check that running in parallel is not hampered on your system by a virus checker or other safety tool. Try with disabled virus checker.

Hope this helps.

Adri

Dear Adri,

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I appreciated for that. Now, it works fine after following your suggestions.

Best regards,
