DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

How to specify several com.* files in process parameter tab?

Hi all,

I'm trying to run a DELWAQ simulation combining three different FLOW simulations. When I have to specify the process parameter of my conceptual model, I would like to specify the ambient water temperature (Temp) and vertical dispersion (VertDisper) from hydrodynamics using the segment functions files com.tem and com.vdf respectively. However, I can only specify one segment function on this tab instead of the three segment functions coming from each hydrodynamic simulation.

Does anyone know how to implement this issue in DELWAQ or how to merge several com.* files from FLOW to be used as a single file in DELWAQ?

Hello Javier,

Are you combining in time or in space?

If in time, you should use a multiple hydfile configuration: Water Quality > Define Input > Hydrodynamics > Combine (also, see section 11.3 of input file manual)

If in space, use ddcouple to merge the files together: Water Quality > Coupling > DD Start.

First, I've used ddcouple to merge the com.* files generated by my three hydrodynamic simulations (one per simulation) because they were parallel simulations. Next, I've used the combine tab (WAQ GUI) in order to generate my multiple hydfile as explained in the manual. Both tasks are done right...

The issue is related to the specification, in the tab of process parameter due to the active processes of a conceptual model, of the ambient water temperature, the ambient water salinity, the vertical diffusion or any variable coming from FLOW, i.e., com.tem, com.sal, com.vdf...In this tab, I've edited these variables as scalar fields and imported their values using a Delf3D-WAQ segment function, i.e, the mentioned com.tem, com.sal or com.vdf... However, I've only been able to specify one com.* (segment function) in this tab of the GUI.

Analogously to the multiple hydfile *.mhy that combines three com.hyd files (hydrodynamics tab), I would like to combine, in time, several hydrodynamic variables (temperature, salinity, vertical diffusion,...) as scalar fields from three different hydrodynamic simulations. As I've mentioned, I was not able to specify all of them in the GUI. Is there any option to do this task inside or outside the GUI in order to specify, for example, three com.* files in the tab of process parameter?

Just to make sure: if all you need to do is combine domains, running ddcouple is enough, no need to use the multiple hydfile option. Simply load the merged hydrodynamics and proceed as usual.

From your previous post I understand you have to merge in time as well. Then indeed using the multiple hydfile option is the way to go. To use the com-*.tem files from your merged runs, edit block 7 of the input by adding something like:

SEG_FUNCTIONS
'VertDisper' ; name of segment function
ALL
MULTIPLEHYD_FILE
3 2 vert-diffusion-file
INCLUDE 'wqnew.mhy'  ; multiple hyd-file

SEG_FUNCTIONS
'Temp' ; name of segment function
ALL
MULTIPLEHYD_FILE
3 1 temperature-file
INCLUDE 'wqnew.mhy'  ; multiple hyd-file


In this example, 3 is the number of lines to be used in *.mhy file (in this case we have 3 different periods).
The number following 3 is the interpolation option (0 block; 1 linear; 2 special for diffusion).

How does that work for you?

I've tried your suggestions by editing the temperature and vertical diffusion in my input file. The WAQ simulation works properly and has into account the three hydrodynamic simulations.
