DELWAQ

DELWAQ is the engine of the D-Water Quality and D-Ecology programmes of the Delft3D suite. It is based on a rich library from which relevant substances and processes can be selected to quickly put water and sediment quality models together.

The processes library covers many aspects of water quality and ecology, from basic tracers, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter, inorganic suspended matter, heavy metals, bacteria and organic micro-pollutants, to complex algae and macrophyte dynamics. High performance solvers enable the simulation of long periods, often required to capture the full cycles of the processes being modelled.

The finite volume approach underlying DELWAQ allows it to be coupled to both the structured grid hydrodynamics of the current Delft3D-FLOW engine and the upcoming D-Flow Flexible Mesh engine (1D-2D-3D) of the Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (or even other models such as TELEMAC).

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to setup the sediment water exchange module on a 3d-zLayer-model of a lake and encountered some problems. Can anybody help me with the following two questions?

1. In the third group of the input-file (*.inp) I have to specify a sediment-grid by including a file with the appropriate numbering of the bottom segments. Since I am using z-layers the bottom cells are not simply the cells in the last layer, but depend on the water depths of the vertical column. Do I have to specify the exact bottom cell? How do you deal with cells outside of the lake? Does anybody have an example file?

2. I tried different configurations of the sediment-grid and didnt' t get any error messages related to the grid when running delwaq1. Nonetheless delwaq1 stops with an error saying ' ERROR. End card of block 5 not found'. It seems to look for open boundaries, although I didn't specify any. In the lst-file, I get negative numbers for the bottom exchange segments. According to the manual, negative numbers are reserved for open boundaries, so maybe that's the reason. Is this because of the wrong specification of the sediment-grid (question 1) or is there another reason?

Ok, I forgot to specify the boundary conditions at the lower boundary of the sediment, obviously. Now it is running, but nothing happens. The concentrations in the sediment layers remain constant throughout the simulation and there's no exchange between water column and sediment. Maybe I forgot to activate the complete set of processes needed.

I have another, more general question: Is it possible to write output from the sediment layers into the map file, and if yes, how so?

Your help is greatly appreciated.
