intro story Lake

Lake

Lakes and reservoirs are important resources for communities around the globe. They provide food, drinking and irrigation water and can also offer spots for recreation. Under certain conditions lakes can also represent a threat for local communities, such as flooding or limnic eruptions. The ecological state of shallow lakes may be hampered by suspended sediments due to wind driven currents and waves. In deep lakes, stratification can cause undesirable anoxic conditions in the deeper areas. Understanding these systems is crucial to enable a sound management of these water bodies.

Delft3D is the state-of-the-art modelling framework for hydrodynamics, water quality, ecology, waves and morphology.

Here, in this space, we share knowledge & experiences, and discuss issues related to modelling of lakes.

Delft3D Flow Wave communication problem after restart

Dear Delft3D users:

I am trying to run a coupled Delft3D flow-wave model which is run through a matlab script which is used to simulate vegetation. Every 12h tidal cycle the simulation stops, input data is updated and after that the simulation is started again. In this process all input files are copied to a new folder, including the trim-file, which is used for restarting. Com-files are not copied. The flpp interval is 1 hour, and therefore communication between flow and wave begins immediately after restarting the simulation.

The problem is that sometimes the communication between flow and wave does not work immediately after the restart (the problem does not occur in the middle of the tidal cycle), but this happens at a random moment in the simulation (not always during the first restart for example). I cannot figure out what the problem is, and hope that you can help me. When the simulation crashes a com-file is present.

Tri-diag error:
*** WARNING DPSOPT value reset to DP because of restart
*** MESSAGE Morphological Changes Start Time (step) : 43200
*** WARNING Latitude of your model is 0 degrees, model located at equator
*** WARNING Comm. stop time outside (<) simulation period; will be reset
*** WARNING Comm. stop time outside (>) simulation period; will be reset
*** ERROR Initialization of DelftIO communication with waves failed
*** ERROR Flow exited abnormally

dio-wave-errors:

DioError 903: Could not open WAVE2FLOW_DATA.txt for deletion

Hi Ivar,

There are many possible wrong settings leading to this kind of error message. You probably have to try to seperate the possible causes. For example, are you running the cases on one local system? or try to increase the delay and waiting time between flow/wave communication (by changing the dioconfig.ini file)? etc.

Hope this is a little bit helpful,

Qinghua

Dear Qinghua,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I had already tried to increase the delay and waiting time in the dioconfig file but after your comment I increased it even further and this did the trick.

Thank you very much!

Dear Ivar and Qinghua,

could you explain how you restart a simulation from a certain point in the simulation? I am setting up an operational forecast system that will run a online wave-flow simulation for a few days of model time, then the next day it will start up again to forecast the next few days. I understand you can output restart files on the flow side, but for a coupled wave-flow model I can't see how you restart the wave model, as the hot-start files seem to get deleted at the end of each wave run. Therefore, is there a way to restart both wave and flow from where the models stopped, without having to start the wave or flow model from cold, requiring some spin-up time?

Thank you;

Kit.

Hi Kit,

I am getting the same issue, did you ever find a solution?

Best regards,

John
