Lake

Lakes and reservoirs are important resources for communities around the globe. They provide food, drinking and irrigation water and can also offer spots for recreation. Under certain conditions lakes can also represent a threat for local communities, such as flooding or limnic eruptions. The ecological state of shallow lakes may be hampered by suspended sediments due to wind driven currents and waves. In deep lakes, stratification can cause undesirable anoxic conditions in the deeper areas. Understanding these systems is crucial to enable a sound management of these water bodies.

Modelling Water Quality of the bay along the lake shores

Dear all,

I am a student trying to check variations of water quality in the bay of a lake and wondering if anyone has done this before. I am completely new to Delft3d-D-Water quality. How do you advise me to start? I have tried to run the 'friesian_tidal_inlet' example to start with and get acquainted with Delf3d Flow yet I get the error or unknown signal below;

What could be the problem?

Hello Mary,

Which platform are you working on? Windows, Linux? Which version of the code?
I guess you're talking about example 01_standard, right? How did you start the run exactly?

Regarding your future application, as it seems you're starting from scratch, you first challenge will be to setup a hydrodynamic model:
- make a grid using RGF-grid
- generate corresponding bathymetry
- get meteo data
- get inflow/outflow data, if relevant
- etc...
The easiest way to go is to model the whole lake. It may not be very efficient if your area of interest is much smaller than the lake, but at least you won't have to figure out relevant boundary conditions.

What kind of water quality problems are you going to investigate?

I am using Windows and version delft3d_tags_5.01.00.2163. And yes it is the standard example 01. To run the code I went through the step by step procedure in Chapter 5 (Tutorial) of the Delft3D-Flow user manual using the GUI provided in the folder (delft3d_ohmw_4.01.00.rc.03). I built my .mdf file from the 'flow input' section and clicked on the 'start' section. this is when I get the 'child killed signal'. What could have gone wrong? Do I have to install another version?

I tried running run_flow2d3d.bat and it was successful. However when I try using the GUI I get the same signal...

Starting Delft3D-FLOW computation ...

child killed: unknown signal

However in my Email for obtaining the GUI, it was specified that:
'You can use this pre-compiled GUI and the pre & post processing tools for the following modules of Delft3D: FLOW (D-Flow) & MOR (D-Morphology) version 6.00.00.2346 & up, WAVE (D-Waves) and DELWAQ (D-Water Quality + D-Ecology).
You do need to manually download the source code of these modules form the download page at the Delft3D Open Source Community site and to compile it yourself. You will find detailed instructions there as well.'

But I cant seem to get the version 6.00.00.2346. Can you advise which tagged folder I can use?

Anything above revision 2346 should do it. Try 2367 or 2399 for instance.
