intro story Lake

Lake

Lakes and reservoirs are important resources for communities around the globe. They provide food, drinking and irrigation water and can also offer spots for recreation. Under certain conditions lakes can also represent a threat for local communities, such as flooding or limnic eruptions. The ecological state of shallow lakes may be hampered by suspended sediments due to wind driven currents and waves. In deep lakes, stratification can cause undesirable anoxic conditions in the deeper areas. Understanding these systems is crucial to enable a sound management of these water bodies.

Delft3D is the state-of-the-art modelling framework for hydrodynamics, water quality, ecology, waves and morphology.

Here, in this space, we share knowledge & experiences, and discuss issues related to modelling of lakes.

Thanks for help.

Hi Sebastian,

Wish/Tcl/Tk is used in the Delft3D-menu. It seems that this shell is having a problem after 6 days of calculation.

If you are lucky, your calculation is still running properly and the problem is only related to Delft3D-menu (including the window showing the progress). You can check this by having a look at the output files (is output still being produced?) and using the Microsoft Task Manager (is the calculation still running?).

As a workaround: Run your calculation without using Delft3D-menu. You have two options:
  • Delft3D-menu can generate a batch script to run the calculation. This is the easiest method, but still Wish/Tcl/Tk is involved in starting the calculation.
  • Use a Windows batch script without any usage of Wish/Tcl/Tk. Example scripts can be found in the source code tree. It might be necessary that you adapt the script to have it using the correct binaries and be able to find the input. This also depends on what Delft3D-FLOW version you are using, see the release notes for more info on this. If you have problems/questions about this, please have a look at the description, search this forum for answers or post a question here.

Adri

Hi Sebastian,

Here is a third option:
Attached is a file called "hyd_online.tcl". If you replace the "hyd_online.tcl" in your Delft3D installation with this one, the problem might be solved.

Background information: Every time a line is echoed to the output window, this consumes some memory. It is not much but may cause problems when you produce millions of lines. This is solved by removing old lines.
