Lake

Lakes and reservoirs are important resources for communities around the globe. They provide food, drinking and irrigation water and can also offer spots for recreation. Under certain conditions lakes can also represent a threat for local communities, such as flooding or limnic eruptions. The ecological state of shallow lakes may be hampered by suspended sediments due to wind driven currents and waves. In deep lakes, stratification can cause undesirable anoxic conditions in the deeper areas. Understanding these systems is crucial to enable a sound management of these water bodies.

Dredging Activity and Suspended Sediment

Hello,
Dredging activities may have great effects on the suspended sediment concentration.
Delft3D can simulate dredging activity and I want to know the suspended sediment as a consequence of the dredging and the changes of suspended sediment concentration after dredging. How can I see the results of suspended sediment changes resulting from dredging?
I did two test simulations with one dredging and another not. But it seems that there was no differences between the two conditions. Does it mean that dredging activities show no impacts on the suspended sediment concentration?
Can you give me some advices?

Hi Li,

The dredging and dumping feature moves sediment from the bed in one location immediately to the bed in another location; it was designed mainly to study the impact of dredging and dumping on the long-term morphological evolution. It does not create the suspended sediment dynamics associated with the dredging and dumping operations. To study the suspended transport of the dredged sediment and the impact that it has on the environment is usually studied by adding discharge points to the simulation that represent the source of the suspended sediment.

Thank you for your reply.

Just like what you said, I could not seen the changes of suspended sediment concentration in dredging activities. Maybe I should add some discharge points and define the time-series sediment concentration in the dredging areas according to the volume of dredged materials. I will try to do a test simulation later.

To simulate the suspended sediment as a consequence of the dredging activity (the suspended sediment when the dredging is happening) is a complex phenomenon and many processes are involved, such as, sediment stiring up by the cutting head, mixing by the turbulence caused by the movement of cutting head MCDVOICE
